• Project Definition Phase (PDP) initiated in August 1983 with a government sanction of Rs. 560 cr for conception of LCA programme.
• PDP document submitted to the government in 1988.
• In mid 1993 Phase-I of Full Scale Engineering Development (FSED) sanctioned:
Rs. 2188 cr sanctioned included Rs Rs 560 cr sanctioned earlier.
Scope limited to building and flight testing two Technology Demonstrators only.
• First Flight on 4th January 2001 (Less than 8 yrs)
• FSED Phase-II sanctioned towards design, development and flight testing of 3 Prototypes and 8 Limited-Series Aircraft at a cost of Rs. 3301.78 cr.
• Additional Rs. 2475.78 cr sanctioned In 2010.
• The delay in obtaining these sanctions necessitated several design upgrades towards obsolescence management.
• All these were addressed making Tejas a state-of-the-art, advanced Four Generartion combat aircraft.

have yet to learn from Chinese art of copying.
Pay money to designers, get leading engineers of foreign co work for u.
Dont worry too much abt morality, even US built a lot war machinery from German blueprints.
Japanese built cars from US technology and improvised it and Chinese copied everything from nock and corner and are big economy

aeroengine is the heart of the aircraft. without this we cant claim a success. IAF will mostly reject this aircraft

Tejas a super indigenous plane!!!

Tejas a super indigenous plane!!!
Development delayed by Congress Govts as they have always prefered imported to indegenous for reasons best known to them.
From Tatra Trucks to Bofor Guns are some of the items inspite of transfer of technology have been kept dormant or delayed.
Same was case with Maruts fighter planes..
It's time such blunders be exposed and guilty punished so that no one dares to do it again..

Combat ability?
by Mike Teflon on Jan 18, 2015 12:18 AM

The fact that it finally rolled out is heart warming news.. This article however, does not discuss its combat abilities, besides the fact that it's a very light aircraft and thus has better maneuverability(presumably)..

It is indeed developed to replace MiG-21 which was supposed to match F-16 bombers. So it would be interesting to know, if LCA can match F-16 or not? whether it can carry nuclear warheads or not among other capabilities..

Kudos to Indian scientists and hope to see better things much sooner than later..

Engine

Time for India to develop engine technology. Not sure if even Indian manufacturers of 2 wheelers make their own engines.

There is no need to develop a two wheeler engine, India make small engines and big industrial diesel engines.
developing aircraft engine is not a joke it takes lot of knowledge and equipment every component has to be so precise with virtually zero tolerance.
60% of the worlds aircraft's use Rolls Royce engines, abut 30% use Lockheed and 10% use some other make.
India will develop its engines with time and with it India will also have to develop precision manufacturing facilities.
It is not a job for a local blacksmith but highly trained engineers.
Or design a sub contract it to be manufactured else where in the world and assemble it in India.

The point is that the country which controls supply of engines controls manufacture of the aircraft and in times of war the war policy of the country.

It is great that India finally built an up to date airframe, but it is far from enough. Inability to develop aero engines suggests a mental deficiency rather than a physical problem. A large country like India has no physical problems in making aero engines. Problems are only mental and mental problems are far far greater than just in the development of aero engines.

Gas Turbine Research Establishment(GTRE) was established in 60's by the Govt. of India, in Bangalore, to indigenously manufacture a Jet Engine for Military aircraft. It was pre-maturely named as "Kaveri". Even after 60 years and a lot of money, they could not produce even a prototype so far. And India is importing GE engines for its Tejas aircraft. So much for the Indian Scientfic Establishment and meddling bureaucracy and corrupt politicians.

If the aircraft is designed elsewhere how would it become indigenous?

btw, do you sub-contract a war craft design and manufacture, then what else is left to roll out a fully-functioning product? Do you think assembly is a substantial process?

not just rollsroyce; there is GE pratt whitney, snecma, honeywell, etc. Innovation is always the key for any technology development. indians are laggards at innovation. we have to only copy. that also seems to be impossible in the case pf something like eroengine

Sub-contracting means using the facilities that exist else where.
Do you repair your Car,Radio,TV,Washing machine etc yourself of sub contract the repairs to a specialist?
Do You manufacture all these items yourself of buy them manufactured elsewhere. If you open the back f your TV and look care fully you will see that various parts are manufactured by different companies in different Countries.
It may have a label on it "Made in Japan", but is it?
Cloth of your shirt might be manufactured in India, but the shirt could be stitched in Bangladesh.
