The visit to the UAE
by piri on Aug 19, 2015 12:14 AM  | Hide replies

has been a series of astoundingly surprising experiences for Narendra Modi !

Narendra Modis disbelief started when the ministry for overseas Indians - responding to Modis call to identify any arena where he can try and be seen to be friendly with Biharis and Bihari Muxlims - informed him that the largest single segment of Indian blue collar workers in the UAE is from Bihar and that most of them were Muxlims !!!

This was truly astounding for Narendra Modi. He had, like almost every North Indian who is short of reading but full of prejudices, earnestly believed up until then that ALL Indians in the UAE and in other GCC countries were Malayalis ! Whatever made Biharis land up there ?????? And to think that they are more numerous than Keralites among blue collar workers in the UAE; how incredulous to the unread and prejudiced mind !!

The next gigantic surprise for Narendra Modi was when he landed up in the Abu Dhabi labour camp (the ICAD residential area) and saw the buildings, roads, and allied facilities !

He had, again like most North Indians, been convinced that all labour camps (at least for Indians) would be slums like they are in most parts of North India, and especially in the state of Gujarat !!

Imagine Modis surprise when he saw that there were a) No tenements teeming with people and children all around, b) No open drains choked with refuse and debris, c) No open defecation anywhere around and absolutely no sign anywhere of exreta lying in the open !!

Is THIS a LABOUR CAMP?, wondered Modi aloud to his assistants. Why is a labour camp not like those in Gujarat and in other parts of North India ?

The third surprise confronted Modi when he met 300 Indian workers in the labour camp. A few of them complained to him that while they are immensely better off in Abu Dhabi than in Bihar or in other parts of North India, they would love to see him do something to afford themselves and their families back in India some help with their savings, investments, schooling for their children, medical care, airline services, etc.

During the course of this interaction, someone proffered to him his job contract and explained to him that it is vetted by the ILO. At this, Modi turned animatedly aside to his aide and furtively asked him what the ILO is and what is meant by an ILO vetted job contract !!

Modis surprise on hearing about it knew no bounds. He wondered aloud to that aide why the ILO should vet a job contract and why matters in this regard cannot be in the good old Gujarati way everywhere (no job protection, Rs. 80/- per day wages for 12 hours of work and absolutely no kind of safety measures at work for blue collar unorganized workers). He told that aide and everyone who would listen that the UAE is doing its *development* and prospects for its *development* immense harm by having such needless arrangements as ILO vetted job contracts that regulated work conditions for blue collar workers !!

But surprises did not seem to end that evening for Narendra Modi.

At the sports and recreation hall where he interacted with Indian workers, he saw a sign on a door that read *Toilet* !!

Now, whatever is THIS ???

A toilet in a building in workers colony ???

But it was when the by now utterly amused group of workers told him that they all have functional toilets in their apartments with running water and that the shxit did not run along the streets but into very large and well constructed soak pits/septic tanks that were cleaned regularly by automated systems/machines and that there was absolutely no direct handling of night soil by people that Modi truly lost his bearings !!!

Why, oh just why, does the world simply not accept and adopt the Gujarati model of human settlements (with nearly half - 49 % to be precise by 2013 count - of all Gujartis defecating in the open) ???? Don't THEY understand that such a model is so very essential for a country or state to become *developed* ????

Oh, just a little bit of satire to highlight the big gulf between what Modi professes about Gujarat and what Gujarat actually is !!

Leave the GCC countries aside. Compare Gujarat on basic development parameters with Kerala and one can will find an almost equally wide gulf !!

No fooling matter. One has an umpteen number of surveys - conducted both by public as well as private agencies - to verify this fact !
