NHRC and media guilty of not protecting witnesses
by thothathri raman on Apr 14, 2015 07:08 PM

Indian media has been identifying every single person who testified against the policemen who killed 20 migrant workers in cold blood in Andhra Pradesh and their friends and other relatives while they deposed before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) A commission that is to protect human rights should never have let the media lionise its proceedings and go about blatantly naming people putting them under severe danger. We are not talking about petty criminals here, we are dealing with people who can kill so blatantly and openly without any fear of law. As a senior media person myself having held leadership positions in leading newsmagazines I feel ashamed that this country really doesnt care about the poor man. Should it take a law like in the case of Rape survivors to bar media from reporting real names and places? Isnt there is voluntary code of restraint for the media and a clear mandate for the NHRC to protect its witnesses?

Seshachalam killings

It is surprising how readers don't understand who the chief beneficiaries are: powerful people in A.P. and maybe T.N., maybe in the government. The labourers who actually cut the wood are their pawns. And in some cases, they get killed even without reaching the forest! See who the police are working for?

Recall the Veerappan case. He was shot dead from a distance, when he could have been captured. But he probably knew too much to live.

Seshacalam encounter

Encounter was horrible - no doubt about it. Police could have avoided it. But then....

'ignorance of law is of no excuse' ... isn't that what we are always led to believe? Are these 'laborers' not aware that Red Sanders tree cutting is illegal in the country? It was everyone's knowledge that there were orders that the people caught doing so will be shot at..! What were these 'smugglers' thinking of when they were cutting down the trees? They came with greed (that a day would fetch FAR more money if you indulge in this).. so they pay for getting caught..!

And .. BTW, let's not pretend to believe that these guys are oh-so-innocent that they kept quiet when police arrive to arrest them earlier..Police were attacked with stones mercilessly. Police getting injured seriously is a regular thing in AP newspapers..!

So all this added up led to this ghastly incident. Both sides are equally responsible for this - putting the blame squarely on Police is not correct.

The worst part in this is the role being played by the so-called NHRC (which NEVER opened their freaking mouths when the police were getting attacked). One would only hope they show the same concern when a police gets killed also.
So, now what? NHRC will declare the police as anti-human beings and recommend to suspend them... Meanwhile, the red sanders smuggling will go on.

It is surprising that NHRC with in 24 hours of the incident came out with a statement and another statement in Hyderabad that it is not an encounter. Can there be dispensing of Justice? These smugglers are so powerful like Nehru time gold smugglers they can dictate governments. If these are innocent laborers from a few hundreds of miles for a day or two days work can these workers work for the same wages work in their home towns. What is the catch? If these smugglers are innocent laborers then the drug peddlers will come as innocent carriers and India will be a haven for all illicit trades
