Rafale vs FGFA
by Rajiv Shivashankar on Apr 10, 2015 12:50 PM  | Hide replies

Both aircraft come with different specifications and have different operational envelopes in the case of a war. A FGFA cannot do what a Rafale can do, and a Rafale cannot perform what the FGFA is expected to do. The IAF needs both, with the SU 30 MKI to take care of all threats, actual, perceived, and virtual,
in the neighbourhood.

Russian planes are not bad. If they are available at cheap rrates we must purchase them without going in for tendering process . A committe can be constituted to negotiate rates and planes procured without delay. Fr French Rafale we must ask them not to devaite fom tender terms as accepted.

Stick to one vendor
by veluprabhakaran on Apr 02, 2015 09:16 PM  | Hide replies

The IAF is trying to kill local indigenous planes for kick backs from foreign companies, its quite evident many a times the requirements were downgraded when purchasing from abroad companies.
Corruption is rampant in purchase and procurement department of armed forces (Try auditing army canteens)
The basic engineering principle states deploy first and improvise over a period time, all countries including china have done that,

IAF has successfully scuttled the initial deployment of indigenous planes by pushing the parameters sky-high but have eased which it comes to foreign companies

you cannot become a super power by purchasing arms from outside, it will drain and kill your economy.

If are really cannot do with indigenous planes for time being then better stick to one vendor ( we have already have invested heavily on Mig and Sukhoi planes )
Investing on another vendor/country will only create a logistics and supply chain nightmare.

No plane is prefect, it requires a enormous cost to maintain and sustain a 4.5 gen aircraft, each time a plane flies it needs to refitted with components which are to be procured from vendor,
Thats the reason why Rafale is not willing to sign the guarantee agreement as it plans to milk the indian economy by a steady stream of spare parts and maintenance cost.

Mig has killed many of our trained pilots. Today, technology matters a lot not just a numbers alone. We have to choose right partners considering long term strategies.

The cryogenic engine technology transfer took 3 decades before seeing a success. The Kudankulam atomic power plant took another 3 decades for producing power.

Are we going to wait for another 3 decades to produce 5th generation fighters? By then, world might be using 7 generation fighters and we will be stuck with 5th generation fighters like how we are stuck with 2G when entire world is marching towards 4G in telecom industry

Everyone is talking about latest technology, bullet train, good governance, but no one is willing to talk about main problem - Population explosion in this country.

Whatever good work is happening would be decimated if this problem is not sorted out immediately. Our children will be fighting for basic items if this issue is not sorted out, as India population will surely double in next 20-25 years.

All measures - beg borrow buy & steal - required for a credible defense production set up indigenously. Look at Pak - stolen most of its nuke tech. Only one way & measure will not bring ustainable results

What stops India from
by dhananjay kritu on Apr 02, 2015 07:57 PM

Having both Rafaele and Sukhoi PAK FA as well as maybe one or two other fighters/fighter bombers?
When China is modernizing and expanding fast, and arming Pak also, we cannot think in terms of 10 or 20 billion.
Also as regards Eurofighter & F-35 : they are made by consortiums. So in war time it is difficult to depend on a motley crowd as vs either France or Russia who have stood by India.By all yardsticks F-35 is a whote elephant. Sukhoi FGFA is at least a good 4.5 generation fighter even if its stealth features were not to work. China has an ambitious programme of stealth fighters and is gifting them to Pak also.Like in Chess, you need the pawns as well knights bishops castles etc, you cannot bank on one point solution. So India should forthwith proceed for both Aircraft as well any other alternatives possible. As regards US made equipment, it is ok for ancillary work & support, not for the main job, as US is well known to apply embargos in actual war situations, right now they had stopped all supplies to Egypt. In a pursuit for ideals we should not be left with olf stock of MiG 21's only.

It is better to opt for a partner who is ready to transfer technology and not just products.

What's going on!! Is defense became a joke!!!
by sivadutta panigrahi on Apr 02, 2015 05:59 PM

Dear Indians,
Every time any defense related news comes, it surely comes with controversies, allegations and everything. What a common man will believe? Our defense related budgets going as waste!!! After having so many scientists, can\'t we select what is good for the country? Why these type of disturbing news are coming out? Don\'t we love our nation or it\'s simply pocketing tax payers money by any means. Please answer so called intellectuals or so called highly educated brainy person what a common man will believe corruption or progression?Sadly we can\'t develop any defense technologies on our own after these many years of Independence.

Siva

Rafale Vs FGFA
by Ravindra Parasnis on Apr 02, 2015 05:40 PM  | Hide replies

Ajai Shukla's criticism is becoming monotonous. What has he against the professional advice given by our Air Marshals? Are they not supposed to do their duty? There are checks & counterchecks within the Air Force. There are independent agencies like the DRDA, ADA & HAL to advise the Govt. Finally, there is the MoD to evaluate and take decisions. Should we close down all these and put journalists in decision-making positions? Journalism should neither be so judgmental nor so irresponsible in attitude nor permit corporates to purchase our media.
We have always faced the stonewalling techniques of the Russians, but then in the olden times they sold us their products at very low rates and so we could afford to let them indulge. There were always hidden costs in all their deals. Even then their products were good value for money those days. These days their pricing is near western rates. Worse, they escalate costs even after signing contracts & starting manufacture etc. All this coupled with their stonewalling tactics makes it impossible to have a genuine partnership going.
Should we distrust the Air Force report on Russia's unwillingness to share technology, apprehensions on hidden costs, undperformance of the engine and faulty stealth design of the FGFA? Surely this report has backing of DRDA & HAL too. Otherwise the Govt will not ignore an opprtunity to re-negotiate with the Russians at their behest.

Agree with your statement. This fellow Ajay Shukla is a known Modi/NDA baiter. How do we know he is not in the payroll of the Russians and bent upon trying to scuttle the deal? I feel that the AirForce and the Ministry of Defense under our Prime Minister Modi and Defense Minister Parrikar know what they are doing unlike the previous UPA govt.

Let's trust our Govt to do the right thing since we have an honest PM and Defense Minister. If the Govt was going for the Russian fighter Shukla would have batted for the Rafale.

I am fully in agreement. This Govt. must be given its chance to exercise its will. We have suffered all kinds of anti national nonsense from the Congress or Congress led Governments. We must not allow such motivated and possibly paid criticism to have a say in the governance of our country under the present Government.

Rafale is a white elephant
by veluprabhakaran on Apr 02, 2015 04:36 PM

The government shouldn't fall prey to pressure groups from air force and other lobbies
I suppose rafale is something around 20 years late, it is better to buy SU-35 and SU-MKI planes having rafale in our armory will create nothing but a logistics and supply chain nightmare.
