NGOs in a way have their own role of opposition outside parliament of taking cudgels on behalf of ordinary people and civil society. It is for the govt. to ensure that they operate by the rule book and if in China they can be kept well in check why is it that in India they are being accused of all those wrong doings by the IB ? If the govt. allows itself to be pushed around by the NGOs to the extent of reduction in GDP then whose fault is it ? If GPI has been responsible for blocking mining activities in coal, uranium etc. then it is the govt. rather than the NGO which is to be blamed. If all that wrong doings attributed by the IB on NGOs are correct then what was govt. doing all these days ? Arrest the people indulging in anti-national activities or wrong doings like FEMA violations, money laundering etc. or close the NGO worst comes to come following all due procedure. Who stops the govt. from acting against the NGOs to protect national interest ? As in all other streams one cannot rule out presence of some black sheeps among NGOs too. How often we have heard about presence of foreign moles in the union cabinet itself ! Evidently NGOs indulging in wrong doings must be getting away mainly due to connivance of govt. officials and political patronage for obvious reasons. Then who is to blame for this ? Why not govt. sets its house in order before pointing finger at the NGOs?
The govt should scan all NGOs and prepare a report on their source of funding and their activities. Why at all NGOs are required when the Govt of India is a socialist welfare state with the objective of welfare of all its citizens. The agencies funding these NGOs can give the money directly to the government, why pay to the middlemen called the NGOs,why cannot the government take up the welfare agendas of the so called NGOs.
most ngo receive govt aids and grants. they should therefore be called govt allied organizations. a lot of them falsify data to seek money they just don't deserve - a direct result of corrupt congressi culture. a lot of leftists-communists are involved in ngo business - it is business, no matter how you slice it. a very few would withstand a fair srutiny. in fact, many would have to land in jail for defrauding govt and pocketing money. when you have people like _praful_bidwai protesting this, you know something is rotten in denmark.

Shilpy, Why does the govt not make the report public or discuss it in parliament. Yes as you say there should be a fair scrutiny but do you have any idea if you can have a fair scrutiny. It looks are are a blind supporter on a particular party and a particular ideology. I can say that with conviction that you have a hatred for another party . Opposition should be based on a ideology, on a policy, on a system but not against a party. This gives boost to a healthy democracy as against your thoughts. Yes NGOs receive grants and donations and they do a lot of social work. There are black sheep in every field. Go for a fair and non aligned scrutiny and you will find the truth. Let me add NGOs do not get grants from the government it is only tax concession. Grants and donations come in from individuals and other organizations.
