IMD has a habit of creating a scare about monsoon every year, this is done possibly in connivance with commodity traders, who boost up the prices of fruits and vegetables. Towards the end of monsoon season, IMD conveniently states that the rainfall has been say 95% or above, EVERY YEAR IT HAPPENS. In fact a few years ago the govt had barred the IMD from issuing daily bulletins about rainfall. If you see the long term data there has never been a variation of more than 5 to 6 percent in annual rainfall, which is quite normal. There is another private firm skymet which said there will be 60% shortfall, do these people even know anything about natural phenomena ?
Please wait and watch. I feel the prediction by IMD in advance creates the shortage of essential commodities. IMD can declare only that monsoon will arrive late. Only after the rainy season is over they should tell how much rainfall with excess and deficient. IMD should avoid giving statement in media about the forecast of rains. Minister should also try to avoid from media giving such statement as in the western sector there will be deficient rains.
