Indian management practices need an indigenous evolution spiral
by Ramesh on Jan 25, 2014 05:38 PM  | Hide replies

The three priority areas for India in its relationship with Japan are Japanese technology, capital and modern management practices. -- Mr. Gautam Bambawale
----------------

Unlike American manufacturing management precepts which India has readily imbibed, Japanese management precepts are not easy to translate. The difficulty lies not in semantics but fundamental nature of the practice itself.

In Japanese approach, reliance is placed on the worker to not only deliver quality but solutions to improve quality. The ideas are conveyed using simple math and traditional Buddhist stories and idioms in their native Japanese language.

Respecting Indian workers as a social co-equal by Indian officers is a prerequisite which is unlikely to be met.

MMS had said that value of Electronics hardware imports of India is projected to exceed even oil imports. Japanese could be part of the solution to avoid such a damaging setback to Indian economic growth.

But Japanese are known to guard their technology with far more stringency than US and European counter-parts. It remains to be seen whether mutual trust between India and Japan could evolve to make Japanese relent.

Japanese for long had believed in export led growth, and when they tried investment led growth by investing in fixed and intellectual assets in US, they lost quite badly.

Indian experience with Ranbaxy showed that Indian businessman is not always a reliable partner, when it comes to ethics.

To create a transparent investment climate and fair news reporting standards in Indian media to allay genuine misgivings and engender trust requires travelling some more distance.

Japanese economy has been in stagnation mode for over a decade, and the only long term choice they have is investment led growth. If only India was ready!

Japanese management precept could help parallel development of Bharatiya management precepts. This process is likely to be quite different from assimilation of US management precepts which Indians have done quite successfully.

Japanese management thoughts are probably more suitable in PSUs and government institutions which exhibit far greater social equality than India private sectors.
