Issues put forward by author are correct but those should not be a reason to scrap the mountain strike corps. The army needs to be leaner with the best equipment and training. Shivaji maharaj proved the importance of leaner, better trained force which can strike and vanish. However the China border in very treacherous and no army in the world can defend it whether it is India or China. The likely outcome is both sides grabbing others territory before a ceasefire is declared. And to grab territory India needs a strike corps who plan, train, equip and deploy only to grab territory. They have maps of terrains, know how of local language, legitimate target cities to reach within a certain time and proper plans to advance and withdraw. This is a dedicated mandate that needs planning, training and equipping - India does not have that today but urgently needs it tomorrow.
AUM Indeed it is a welcome piece of news from the Defence realm that the 17 Corps of the Indian Army is in the process of being raised at Ranchi in Jhankhand and would move to its permanent location in Panagarh, West Bengal in 2015. The Strike Corps comprising 80,000 officers and soldiers with appropriate weapon system and logistics commensurate with its task would take a couple of years before it can go into action. In my opinion this time gap should be reduced and action accelerated to put men and material in place sooner. One can never be sure how the leadership of China would view the changes being made in Bharat on the political, economic and military scenes. In 2014 a new government with a new leadership will take over the reins of governance of a big country like ours. Of course, it would be in the interest of all neighbouring countries, especially our giant neighbour, People's Republic of China to be a friendly with the new government in New Delhi as possible. The Indian Army has already three Strike Corps on ground and they are poised for action against Pakistan, if need be. Not having a Strike Corps against China was indeed a major lacuna which will be removed by the remedial action of raising the new Strike Corps -17 at Ranchi. Indeed it is the job of Army Headquarters to post picked officers of high professional calibre to the new army formation so that they prove their mettle in battle as and when an opportunity comes their way. We wish them Godspeed in mission
Heartening to know that the government realized the gravity of repeated Chinese incursions and posturing and has acted fast in sanctioning and creating the strike corp. Way to go. Bharat Mata ki Jai!
our Sinophobic mentality. Why shout that we have a strike corps against China? Even if it is, the government didn't officially announce it this way. Can't we rather see it as expansion of our defense than as defense or offensive against another country?
this type of news aimed at china do no good! discretion is better!
a GDP growth of 12 %, general level literacy increasing to 90%, our ability to make supersonic fighters, transport aircrafts, self sufficiency in energy, 50% enrollment in Higher education from the eligible candidate/students, full employment etc. will make them revise their present aggressive stand!
do we have the leaders to pursue the objective! will the masses support them !

1962 occurred because Nehru did not improve the literacy level, industrial development, food availability, but was preaching panch sheel to the world with a begging bowl in our hands!

GDP growth, Literacy etc. raise in front of State govt rather defense ministry. Why defense expenditure should be punished due to fake state govt.

when citizens are not healthy, literate and self sufficient and with high morale and courageous, no army can save them!

THE PROBLEM IN INDIA IS WITH THE EDUCATED MASS, AS THEY ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF CORRUPTION. SO NO POINT IN SPENDING ON THESE IDIOTS, RATHER SPEND MONEY EFFECTIVELY ON DEFENSE
At one time talking or writiing about forces strength and deployment was a taboo and people have been severly punished for lesser transgressions. Powers like USA can afford to lay bare their strength which might intimidate potential enemies . But to expect the Chinese to shudder at this bit of information is crass stupidity .And also publishing it as China specific is to say the least, most embarrassing .Especially if they clobber us again .The Government is least bothered , because everything they do is for political mileage, the country be damned
I was crying myself hoarse on rediff forums for such a Mountainous terrain-trained strike corps to be in place.
We may eventually need two such strike corps along with their supporting air-fleets. One based in Sikkim and Northern Bengal and another in Assam.
We may also need two more strike-corps on the Western Front with Pakistan. One based in Gujarat and another mountain strike corps based in Kashmir which can invest all of POK and Gilgit-Baltistan in swift operations when the need arises.
All in all, an Indian armed strength of 3.5 million battle ready troops with the large number of mobile artillery and armor and troop transports vehicles in the form of trucks, Jeeps and motorcycles will strengthen our offensive capabilities in South Asia.
When great decisions or challenges are forced upon our glorious nation, we need to be equal to these and we need to be able to not only blunt but also subdue any enemy who threatens our frontiers with punitive and fatal consequences afflicting the enemy for his misadventure.
India should at least have 100,000 to 150,000 troops else these soldiers will get butchered and overwhelmed by sheer numbers alone. Even their construction crews for tibet railways number 100,000 plus.

Jai Hind, 1 Indian = 100 enemies. Now we know who should be punished.
