THE CREDENTIALS OF AN NRI
by Vascado on Dec 23, 2014 05:44 PM

This Government sympathizes more with NRIs who fleed this Country selfishly in pursuit of high scale ambitions. And these NRIs who deserted this Country thereby causing a brain drain ironically preach patriotism to locals and also try to create a favourable opinion on the one they fancy during elections advising the locals to toe their line for the good of this Country. And during Cricket matches played between their Country of choice and country of origin, they turn traitors to their own mother land where they earn a living and turn admirers for their erstwhile home land. These are the credentials of an NRI and no wonder this Government is bent upon appeasing them.

It is not necessary that they are residing abroad temporarily. Many have temporary residence permits which can be for periods upto 5 years and there are many who practically stay abroad permanently while holding Indian citizenship.

NRIs already have voting rights
by Tariq Hasan on Dec 23, 2014 01:03 PM  | Hide replies

The article is misleading. NRIs can vote as they are Indian citizens. She is referring to PIOs who have taken other citizenship.

Can any body tell what is the full form of NRI. It shows they have accept citizenship of where they are living and how they have voting right. When they have accept citizenship they they are voter of particular country where they are living how Foreign Minister mis lead to the NRI. Please clarify Madam. When they vote in India then they re bitrayal to their country where they have recieved citizenship. Please clarify Madam

Giving voting rights to PIOs who have citizenship of foreign countries is atrocious. Giving voting rights to people who have citizenship of India is fine but let them come to India to exercise it. there is no need to make special arrangements for them to vote for Indian elections even when they are residing abroad. Of course, this logic does not apply to government employees who are residing abroad due to compulsions of their job.

Exactly. People who have no stake in the governance of India should not be given any voting right.

BJP seems to be doing it because it's following amongst NRIs is good. It's a very short sighted policy of BJP.

Wow..so NRIs are remitting to benefit "Indians like him"??! NRIs invest because they get better and safe returns here. If Timbuktu gives that they would invest it there.

Where is the 'shortsightedness' here? My point is that NRIs are not investing here out of love for the country but for the returns, safety and for the sake of their own dependents. There isnt any need to put on a cloak of selflessness. Difficult?

And in fact the 'investment' by NRIs here in real estate is driving housing away from the reaches of ordinary people residing here in India.
