Manthan- The Programme for Psycho-social Development of Children Affected by Parental Suicides A BJS initiative under 'WERC-ENG' (Wagholi Educational Rehabilitation Centre- Empowering the Next Generation) The Need for Manthan Over the last few years the drought crisis has become very acute. Factors such as deficient rainfall, lack of adequate supply of rainwater for irrigation, lack of water and fodder for the livestock, failed crops, bankruptcy or indebtedness arising due to inability of farmers to repay agricultural loans etc. exponentially deteriorates their economic condition. This leads to a lot of stress and emotional turmoil within their families. The mounting turmoil and anguish snowballs into the farmers' showing suicidal tendencies with several of them eventually committing suicide. Witnessing such a depressing scenario day in and day out, adversely impacts the psychology of the children therein. They too are likely to yield to trauma and depression, as proven by international research studies. Worldwide research indicates that children of parents who have committed suicide are at the highest risk of attempting suicide themselves. Those who lost a parent to suicide as children or teens were three times more likely to commit suicide than children and teenagers with living parents. that the doctor lists here doesnt warrant somneone to kill themselves. It is the imposition from other sources that create this mess. The yawning gap between rich and poor and the middle class cannot even buy a square foot of roof above their head, all covered by political mafia and their goons who control every thing that is their livelihood. Most of the people are forced to commite suicide by the loan sharks, government servants who use the misery of these people to exploit them for their own benefits. Lets not even talk about the treatment these victims get in the hospitals where they have to bribe money to the corrrupt ward boys to doctors to even get themselves treated for diseases, ailments etc. I am wondering why the NGO members dont analyze various cause of the social pressure and always blame the victims for their weak mind?
Can we attribute this to the pollution - air, water, food etc. that brings down the tendency of the body to contain the outburst of emotions by secreting certain hormones (the good ones). The pollution is a by product of development and also the long working hours infront of severe radiation from CRT monitors etc can contribute severely. The movies contribute the cause too. Look at movies from the North and the proportionate increase in rapes. And the glorifying of the suicides in movies on the name of love, failure etc., creating an illusion of martyr.
they seem to know the facts, know what they are doing. loneliness, bottling up emotions, self-inflicted pressure with huge expections on ones self - common reasons. hope they succeed in reaching out and saving these hapless people before they end their life.
