Settlers in the US are drawn from
by piri on Mar 31, 2013 02:41 AM  | Hide replies

various nations, continents and races.

Most of the English, French, Germans, Poles, Italians, Russians, Latinos, Africans and the Japanese shed those identities slowly over the generations and become integrated as plain Americans.

However, this has not happened at all with most Indians and some Chinese and other Asians living in America.

Most Indians living in the US still retain an intense interest in affairs back home in India. Their interest in Indian politics is famous. They take sides with gusto and are as shrill with their support for various political parties (chiefly the Congress and the BJP) as the parties' home grown supporters are. Despite spending two or three generations in the US and having long become US citizens, this remains true for many Indian Americans.

This fact ought to have been surprising but according to Mr. Praveen Swamy, former associate editor of 'The Hindu', Indian Americans retain so much interest in Indian politics (without a fraction of the social and financial commitment that many Chinese Americans have towards their motherland) chiefly because their efforts to get themselves integrated into mainstream American society always remain futile and they are generally ignored en masse by the native white Americans! For some strange reason, according to Mr. Swamy, Indian Americans seem to accord much more importance to what native whites have to say about them than what Chinese Americans or Philippino Americans do.

The interest almost always never passes on to the American born generation, other than curiosity. American culture is extremely strong and overwhelms all, except perhaps Muslims who tend to be different everywhere.

Not right.

Most Indian Americans of the second and third generations retain an active interest in Indian affairs - although such interest does not go beyond political affiliations and economic 'opportunity hunting'.

This, according to Praveen swamy, is because Indians have some kind of a ghetto mentality despite living in a very liberal country. Such ghetto mentality comes from being generally ignored by their main hosts - the whites!

Religious identity is no identity at all!

At least not a fraction as much as racial identity is!

And after race come culture, customs and language!

Relgious identity makes it as a very distant fifth as a reason for segregation!

Any statistics to support this theory? Has this theory been validated/ endorsed by any other study/ institution?

No study using proper statistical methods may have been done (at least not any that have been published to my knowledge).

But there have been innumerable write ups by Indian observers of the Indian American community that support this view.

These articles keep appearing in 'The Hindu', 'Frontline', 'Outlook',even in 'The Times of India'.

The authors draw on their experiences in dealing with expat Indians in the US and their independent views roughly converge in this matter.

One author (Pulapre Balakrishnan) also gave figures published by the RBI on how much money Indians in the US have paid into the party accounts of the Congress and the BJP. He also referred to payments made into the accounts of religious and quasi-religious organisations in India (the VHP has a gigantic lead over all other organisations in this matter).

According to him, the only probable reason why Indian Americans (he identifies the upper middle class members of the American Indian community as particularly disposed in this manner) is their innate desire to retain a distinct identity for themselves. He quotes different anecdotes to suggest that such an intense desire for an identity completely independent of their association with the US environment stems primarily from the general indifference that their primary host - the white native American - has always had towards the Indian American community.

This is a fairly abstract thought but one which is not so difficult to understand!

The Congress as well as the BJP
by piri on Mar 31, 2013 02:24 AM

have a number of organisations of NRIs labouring hard in the USA to portray these parties in good light.

While those organisations that root for the BJP are enthused by the perceived 'anti-mxulim' stance of the party, those on the side of the Congress vouch for it owing to their cult worship of the Nehru family.

But both types have one thing in common - a fanatical adoration of what they believe is these parties' 'pro-captialist' economic outlook!

Both the BJP supporting and the Congress supporting US resident Indian organisations have this distant hope that someday they will all be able to take good advantage of the 'helpful' economic policies these parties are pushing down the throat of the Indian nation!

While entrepreneurs in these organisations dream of extending their empire to India and making profits several levels higher than what they make in America, others dream of returning to India and launching cosy ventures and walking away with the moolah by taking good advantage of the country's slave labour and corrupt and pliant regulatory mechanisms!

NCP?Until smaller parties act in unison as one third united front. Their aArsee will be kicked everyday. Third united front need to Send their candidate to cabinet as representative of one front. No direct business of bjp-congress cartel should be allowed with smaller parties. If any deals for backing congress or bjp, it should be with third united front as one block.
