Yes Dave petley is true India is overdue large Earth Quake in Himalayas and western side Karnataka to gujarat & rajasthan shore areas,so far the Indian government has not put any disaster management in place, if something happens like the scientists predictions the human losses will be huge even some geographical changes will occur and some of teh places will vanish in Arabian sea.

Earthquake in Himalayas
by Suresh Pachori on Jul 10, 2013 04:02 PM  | Hide replies

Would like to ask Petley what does he suggest a 'country that is illequipped to deal with large earthquakes in the Himalayas' do? Perhaps nothing for such a large area. If it happens it happens and thousands are doomed to die. As it is in Badrinath the story goes that when sins became to much Badrivishal came down from the heavens and settled at Badrinath. Again when the sins (overdevelopment, destructions of forests, power projects) became unbearable the mountains around Badrivishal will cave in(due to an earthquake) and Badrinath will disappear into the earth.

we cant do any thing against nature, one recent example is sendai in japan, japan was all time well prepared for major earth quakes, but what happened in 2011 earth quake, entire sendai city was submerged in Sunami, like this if any thing over due in himalayan region and western shore areas happen huge human life will be lost, we know history, dwaraka was submerged in sunami, like that any thin can happen,so natural calamity damages cant be exactly predicted.it is better to stay away from such vulnarable areas.

Good disaster management culture is the key....
by hawkeye on Jul 03, 2013 06:43 PM  | Hide replies

The most important thing which incidents of this sort shows -- whether it is stampedes at overcrowded temples causing heavy casualties of death or injury, landslides, tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones, floods, industrial disasters is that India lacks a good disaster management culture and system.

Indian citizens should strive to increase their disaster management literacy by reading good books on disaster management or from good websites in the internet.

Good disaster management books are available even at school level as well starting from the eightth standard. This can be studied by all people to develop their disaster management literacy so as to save their own lives or that of dear ones or of other people during calamities.

Studying disaster management skills have its labour and effort, but it is definetely worthwhile in the long run.

In Japan, European and other developed nations, disaster management systems and policies are given great importance and there is a concerted effort to spread awareness of this in society and to create a good disaster management culture . Each citizen is well-drilled in disaster management procedures , and thus casuaslties and damage to property are kept at zero or a minimum during natural calamities.

One thus easily picks oneself up after the disaster and life moves on normally without much hindrances or interruptions, instead of living a traumatised life due to injury, loss of loved ones or property.

In west all small or large conferences first talk about exit routes in case of fire or other disasters.

Here we have none just a lip talk and nothing done, Take Bhopal,Many Stampeds at religious places,Stunami etc.
