Why all this animosity for such a generous and loving act? Will anyone berating the poor priest here ever donate a body part, even for a member of their own faith?

because you people will not do only. Only catholic are there to do all the 70% charity work in India. Tell your Samys to do the same. Let is see who will do.
In kerala there is perfect religious harmony. We Hindus,Christians,Muslims study live and work together. His act is inspirational because he know the color blood is red for any human being. I studied in two christian schools and one christian college. The atmosphere was harmonious for all.

Northies don't believe it. The base of North embedded in discrimination. Keralites are basically working abroad because Missioneries opened 100's good colleges, schools and hospitals in Kerala from where Majority Hindus also qualified.
Pity is one emotion which finds no mention in Gita. Pity or the patronizing attitude towards weaker people is not a healthy emotion.
If you want to help anybody help because 'you want to help' and not because 'he needs your help'. If you want to donate, donate because 'you want to donate' and not because 'he cannot live without your donation'.
Though the act is laudable, I personally believe that the greatest act is where the donor gives without speaking about such words like love, brotherhood, etc. The donor should not have a patronizing attitude towards the acceptor.
The donor should give because he wants to give. Credit for the donation, even if directed to him, should be spurned by the donor. That is the true spirit of donation.

Man, that is old thinking. It should be public, so that it will inspire others to think in a different way
So many donate their blood in many of the blood donation camps. Do we care to bother to whom does it reach in terms of caste, community, religion, language, region, fair, dark, man, woman and so on...
