This is a shocking news for me. People who criticize her dont know what real leader should be like. An iron woman , a proponent of fiscal conservatism, she reformed union dominance which has dragged so many states to ruin - eg: Greece and West Bengal.

She was strong , but she never broke the constitution. Was she corrupt, was she ever accused of scams - but look at the courage and honesty she led with. She led with great dignity and told people exactly how things are, and not what they want to hear. I dream that someday Indian politicians will be like her - strong but honest. And economic pragmatist. Since the early days of Lal Bahadur Shastri we have not seen leaders like him.

Good news for us UK public.
She made more people homeless more then those who are natural homeless through no fault of their own.
In her time interest rates on mortgage reached 17%, which fell down to 5% as soon as she left politics and not stands at 4 1/2 %.
She also stopped milk for school children, a move she regretted very much afterward.
She was duped Margaret Thatcher the Milk Snatcher.
Any way one dead and on to go the Italian robber of India.

I agree with your right to criticise her. But if she did not follow her hardline policies against trade unions, and didnt push for liberalisation, today Britain would be much worse than Greece or other EU countries. She retired politics 20 years ago. Stop bashing her for present problems..

Well then you are just a kid, vijay krishna.
Present problems have source in the her time.
If we did not protested against he then you would be paying poll tax when you was five year old. surely one would not know what poll tax is at the age of 5 but then your parents would be responsible of paying it.
Do you Know about CAN'T PAY, WON'T PAY protest across UK.
If not then you must have been nappies at that time.
Today we have so much employment problems and foreign workers all because of her competitive tendering policies, where even foreign companies can tender for running any company Private or public sector, not only that they can bring in their own workers from their prospective countries and pay them the rate they would pay at home.
I hope you have not been through TUPE, otherwise you will knew what effect her policies had and are having.
her legacy still lives on.

The main difference between...
by vijay krishna on Apr 08, 2013 07:07 PM  | Hide replies

Indira Gandhi and Margaret Thatcher..is indira never had a solid policy or conviction to steer the country ahead to progress. Except for '71 war, there was hardly anything she initiated with an active role. And that too she fizzled out in Shimla. She absolutely had no vision on economic or foreign aspects of the country.
She just played according to times, and drove mainly on populism and sentimesnt.
Thatcher, on the other hand, stood firmly by what she believed, went ahead with her reforms inspite of severe opposition. She firmly did what she believed in..A True Iron Lady..She crushed the trade unions and brought life to economy, and played a lead role in Falklands War, and also pivoted The Cold War era..

it is always easy to be judgemental of a persons achievement or failure after a decade or two. All said & done it is to be admitted that she revived Britains decadent economy, put the labour unions in its proper place, restored Britans leadership to forefront in europe.it is to be admitted that she was more of a man in her cabinet & for a long time will remain as the only women prime minister of Britain and also the first.

She may be a great leader, but not as much a "leader" as Thatcher. Indira never took any leads in any policy or any front until circumstances forced things upon her. She forever followed the policy of "status quo", appeasing ppor with freebies..Nothing big..

She was a strong no nonsense leader who pulled the UK out of the mess it was in when she took charge. But she was a stubborn lady. The Falkland islands should rightly belong to Argentina which is next door. But her colonial mentality made her go to war on these islands which were thousands of miles away and UK wanted to have and still has control over them.It was something like Portugal fighting India over Goa.
