Question to Dr Lee
by Indian Citizen on Oct 01, 2012 04:02 PM  | Hide replies

Getting Cancer or not getting cancer who are exposed to low doses of Radiation is related to WHAT ? It it your GENES who are not prone to or your staying in that environment ?
Dr Linus Pauling did fight against radiation generated out of Atomic energy ( weapons ) and that time too, one of the another Noble laurate did pleade like you in favour of atomic energy use as weapon. There may be N-number of reasons for being safe or unsafe. If our designs are safe for high Richter scale Earth Qwake and Tsunamies, and people around are educated to act according to situations prevailing, we might be able to handle Nuclear demons. They are safer than 2 legged Corrupt demons in positions. At least there is some hope to get power for growth.

I stay 1.5 km away from KFC and McDonald's
by Hemant Kumar on Oct 01, 2012 10:37 AM  | Hide replies

I stay 1.5 km away from KFC and McDonald's and it has not affected my health. THere is a case therefore to builf KFC's all around India: after all they generate employment.
A scientist's opinion should have neen more scientific than this. When a country like Germany has committed to close all nuclear reactors by 2022, there is no reason why a disaster and terror prone India should jump right into nuclear fire.
Let's remember that we are not the only generation this world has to support. We hope our world and life on it would survive for millions of years. But it certainly would not, if we keep contaminating it permamnently (even very small bits) for the sake of ephemeral electricity.

Are you sure Germany will close all by 2022 ? It's a political statement due to green politics gaining momentum, why not close now if it is so dangerous ?

Nuke is clean energy, it is must for India.

Srinivas, Germany is not a banana republic or not one headed by a lame duck govt like ours: let's not belittle German commitment.
Even if you apply vacuum brakes a train would take 50 m to stop. 10 years in the life of a nation to stop all nuclear activty is not too big a time.
Let's not get taken in by propaganda by American commercial interests.

Will Germany also stop buying power from France, where it is generated from nuclear energy?

German politicians are not much better than ours, I have been there in the 2000s and seen how they used the 'Inder oder Kinder' slogan against Indians. And now a Henmant Kumar is busy defending their righteousness!

Do not believe that Germany does what is says. They do not want 3rd world countries to have electrciity and development. They will say all things possible. energy today is the need of the hour for India. And nuclear energy is cleaner and greener thqan thermal coal energy

Low Probability High Impact events - Black Swans
by Sachin Purohit on Oct 01, 2012 10:20 AM  | Hide replies

"We stayed there for thirty years and nothing happened to us" is akin to saying that the sacrificial goat staying with a muslim guy for close to one year believed that he will keep getting good food for ever based on history of getting regular food from its master for close to one year. Needless to say, the goat was shattered when Bakri Idd happened. When catastrophe comes, it does not come announced.

Instead, we should just give up nuclear energy, because

if the river dries, and the chain breaks...
