The execution of the lone surviving gunman
by Edison John on Nov 21, 2012 11:00 PM  | Hide replies

The execution of the lone surviving gunman of the Mumbai massacre of 2008, has been , of course done in a " Highly Secret " manner. But, this does not indicate timidity, or " fearful, hasty manner " as Shiv Sainik Vijay Surve tells us. I fully sympathise with the misery undergone by Mumbai Residents during the massacre, which resulted in the death of 166 people and serious injuries to numerous others. We are NOT LIVING in the STONE age or medieval ages to indulge in a " PUBLIC HANGING " When there is no history at all of EVEN ONE PUBLIC hanging in FREE India, it is obviously absurd to suggest the same for Kasab, whatever the magnitude of the crime HE HAS COMMITTED. You can execute a man only once. You CANNOT execute him MULTIPLE times because the gravity of the crime is that much more severe. Also, it is not for the happiness of someone, that the authorities carry out an execution. It is a legal procedure/formality to execute a person , once he has exhausted all channels of appeals & mercy petitions. Punishments are not a vengeful action but only meant to act as a deterrent for other potential wrongdoers or to reform people who have committed crimes. So, let's not celebrate executions, but let us make it a point to remember that this is the day justice has been done to the berieved members of the families of 166 people who lost their lives in the 2008 massacre !

Any killing is reprehensible

Kasab's hanging was decided by the Supreme Court, considering the slaughter that he - Kasab - along with his cohorts had perpetrated that resulted in the massacre of 166 Indians. Well, India had given long rope to Kasab in giving every legal opportunity to prove himself otherwise. Finally he also had to pay the penalty for his merciless massacre and had to pay with his life.

But there is nothing to rejoice about it. Kasab's hanging was also a killing, his life was also snuffed out - democratically and legally. The argument that he deserved it is another matter. Only thing here is that the highest court decided that Kasab had no right to live any longer and that he should die and society at large endorsed it! It will definitely give some solace to the families of the victims that Kasab was eliminated forever. But those 166 innocent lives won't return now or ever in future.

Capital punishment is heinous and inhuman. Just because Kasab was inhuman doesn't give the society the right to become inhuman too. The courts and government did the same thing as Kasab did, albeit in a very miniscule level.

We are past medieval ages. Eye for an eye may sound good in a battle. But civilized societies need to behave in a civilized manner. Otherwise, there will be no difference between Kasab and democratic governments.
