It is NOT a thumping victory by any stretch of imagination. Obama just scraped thru. The popular votes are nearly at par. Two states would hv made the difference for any candidate. Republican philosophy should not change. This is what defines America. Demographics may have changed and peoples values and expectations with it. A citezenry dependent on Government handouts is not the American way at all. It is Indian politics that creates vote banks not American.

In the US system an incumbent has tremendous advantages, which can be overcome only by a charismatic personality like Bill Clinton. Otherwise, even an idiot like Bush gets second term. In this election nobody felt good about anything- economy, wall street, foreign affairs, housing. Rather it was the poor campaign by Romney and his inability to pull together Republicans partially because he isn't a "true" republican in many of his views, and besides Romney is a religious minority within Republicans, and to top it he alienated different sections of the society by lose talk, that cost GOP the elections.
Next elections any right-winger is going to win. Unless Obama delivers, status quo will not work.

Soul Searching?

Do politicians have souls? GOP has a soul. No way. GOP stands for Greedy Old Party. Show me the money. Everything can be bought. That is the mantra of GOP.

GOP also goes for the Congress party in India. Does it do soul searching with all these scams and gates?

MMS victory led to BJP/Chaddi soul searching. But instead of soul they searched for soles which they threw at each other.

US does not use EVMs everywhere. There are 50 states. Each state is divided int counties and so on. The method of voting depends on the funds available with the local body. Richer bodies use electronic voting. The poorer bodies use paper. Even the ballot paper is not standardised. I don't know about the EVM's used here but any machine can be manipulated. The reason why it takes time in India is because the electorate is at least 2 times bigger than the USA. The Election Commission of India has developed certain norms. Let us respect that. By the way once counting starts, results come out in 24 hours maximum, so it is not really bad in India.

what soul searching?
by shilpy on Nov 07, 2012 06:42 PM  | Hide replies

the only thing that really matters now is the fiscal cliff and taxes. speaker bohner already has said that this election win is no mandate for obama, and that there is not going to be any tax increases on the super rich. it is gridlock as usual unless obama actively seeks romney's help, for there really isn't much difference between obama and romney in most economic issues.

Problem is Romney is not a true republican and is too moderate to lead GoP. And besides if he is retiring from politics why would he help Obama. Obama should not waste time on grand schemes like he did in the first term. Instead he should get moving "Forward". At least the country thinks that things are great now and is willing to support him. He should use this instead of letting status quo prevail.

dear bkg, the next few days look scary as the new obama govt head into the challenges of jobs and the runaway debt which are the top priorities. i think obama probably will do ok on the job-creation front with executive action and help from the fed and the senate. but he can't do without the republican help on debt reduction. it is nail biting time in america - and the world - until fiscal cliff is worked out, and america is put on a firm course for debt reduction. it is a huge task that will separate men from boys, and i hope the sane voices in the republican party provide the lead over those juvenile ruffians who caused huge damage with their one point mean agenda in seeing the president "fail".
