The unequal relationship between India and China needs to be factored in somewhat accommodating stance of Indian political leadership. Less than a decade earlier, China had fought a brutal war with US in Korea, where General McArthur was sacked because US realized it could not advance further against China. The losses in one particular week was 40,000 soldiers. Indians knew they were no match to Chinese, and withdrew from Tibet earlier when Chinese advanced there and to Xinjiang.
1962 preparation perhaps needs to be seen as Chinese desire to consolidate their hold over Tibet and Xinjiang. The strategic choices Chinese leadership made on relationships with India and Pakistan, reflect their priority to consolidate militarily the two annexed nations.

Our international policy seems to be bereft of principles that accord the highest priority to the national interest. On the one hand India recognized Tibet as a part of China, even when the unification of the Indian Nation was still in progress. The British had made a treaty in 1914 with the rulers of Tibet and recognized it as a sovereign state. India seemed to have disregarded this fact in the light of the growing military power of Communist China. Why did India do this and what interest did it serve? We are hard put to find any. After recognizing the fact of Tibet, India gave shelter to their spiritual leader and also allowed his Govt in exile to operate from India besides leaving a boundary dispute unresolved. What does this mean and again the larger question: What national interest was served? There seems to very little gain but more enduring pain. It is difficult to fathom,at least for the common person, what lies beyond these apparently contradictory shifts. The Chinese on the other hand took a more down to earth position- "teach India a lesson"
When is the govt. going to make the Henderson Brooks–Bhagat Report public? Time and again the govt. has cited that the matter in the report is sensitive and can have a negative impact on our relations with China and more importantly on nation's security. Now the very fact that the govt. says that a 50 year old reports contents would have an impact on our nation's security today is in itself a testament to the fact that it has done little in these 50 years to address the security concerns along the northern border. All we (the Indian Citizens) can do for our safety is to hope and pray that a conflict like '62 never crops up in the future.
Everything went wrong in the 1962 war. Nehru's naivete led to the most humiliating debacle of all times. Nehru's China policy was totally flawed. It is another matter that this country keeps on rewarding the Nehru Gandhi family despite the most disatrous chapter in India's history.

yes, the same mistake Mrs Gandhi did again after wining in 1971 war with Pakistaan at East end but not negociating her terms for Kashmir Problem.

The whole family from Nehru onwards and including him has the following: 1. Very low IQ 2. Very low EQ 3. Womanizing mentality 4. Look for looting 5. Power mongering. 6. Swindle poor people at all costs. 7. Sell India slowly. 8. Look for fooling gangsters to follow them around.

nehru tried hard to scuttle saradar patel's action to capture hyderabad, writes MKK Nair, a 1947 batch IAS officer, in his memoirs “With No Ill Feeling to Anybody”.
Mr. Nehru was undisputed leader of India around 1962. there were hardly any opposion to him. he thought his strength will carry him forward in the clash with China. he failed to understand the international politics is diffrent ball game. there were a lot of Nehru bajan mandals, now later they took form of, Indira, Rajiv and now sonia/rahul bajan mandals! India ranks poor in HDI, our import is twice that of our export,
now his attitude has given birth to several bajan mandal for regional leaders.
there are no leaders of substance at present in India who has vision, capacity, leadership qualities to take India forward in the INC, BJP or the third front! we have vigrahams/leaders who listen to bajans and get strength and popularity! our import will become three fourth of our exports consisting of less value added products or iron ore etc. we will be colonised without a foreign soldir setting foot on our soil!
and bajanm mandals will grow and their heads will become the leaders of India!
