fair punishment
by sangeetha on May 24, 2012 09:10 AM

Senetence is fair. Guilt is established. 30 days prison will be sufficient to teach a lesson if he hadnt and he will not repeat such behaviours. Considering it would have been a teenage prank , years of prison would have been too severe punishment. I appreciate Clementi's family's attitude. They are satisfied by conviction and not demanding more severe punishments. It is a pity we do not have lighter sentences in India. Even minor crimes have 2 to 5 years of prison which makes it harder to sentence and even victims feel pity on abuser and drop the case sometimes. A few days in prison is often enough to teach a lesson.

Made for each other!Great!
And greatest is that it appears as rediff headline.

Rediff must have been paid both by US , congress as well. Gives them a chance to show their good relations, even if it means killing the justice and glorifying a killer.

. One can sympathize when his mother is crying. But if you read his twitter/facebook comments you would feel otherwise.

Kiran why does anyone need to read his tweets just one look at the smugness on his face is sufficient to show what Dharun Ravi thinks of the whole affair.

Even in the past 20 months, this guy is basically focussed on building his career, he pursuing online courses to keep up his acadmeic schedule. I think he sees the whole thing as an unnecessary timepass, not as a tragedy that needs to be dealth with, and is waiting for all the hullabaloo to get over before he can get back to college and a normal life. If one fellow has died, how does it matter really, in Mumbai every day a few people get killed while trying to cross the railway tracks so whats the big deal, may be this guy's thinking.

AI, He will have to set up his shop all by himself if he wants to pursue a career. IF he wants to work for somebody else thgen they will have to worry about how he will protect their integrity (through cam video recordings and disclosure of confidential information etc)

But a lot of people here in our country will not accept a trial like this saying that it was a teenage prank that went wrong and that it is usual to expect these in college. Some people go through bullying at college level and bceome mentally scarred. And the bullies are bullies anywhere irrespective of their age. Being a victim of suchg bullying I can tel that I have never had a satisying interpersonal interaction even many yewars after the college bullying episodes. For bullies there is anything to pick upon.

Kiran, sorry to note that you were a victim of bullying at some point of time, and its long lasting effect. Bullying is one of the most vicious things that a person can engage in.

In India, bullying is an accepted fact of life at various stages.

In the initial days, there is some level of bullying at School. However, it is still somewhat contained because parents are closely involved with the system at this stage. This is followed by college where bullying under the garb of 'ragging' goes to different heights altogether. There is some realization & legislation that is now in place to address ragging, but there is still some distance to travel.
Finally there is the organized bullying at workplace, if you are employed with someone else. Many (not all) Indian bosses, attack the worker instead of the work. SO if a person submits an inaccurate report, the hit is not on the report but on the person, with personal attacks like, "Have you no brains?". Then consciously vague instructions are issued by bosses, resulting in an employee submitting a work with his / her interpretation of the bosses' instructions, frquently to be received by "Can't you think?" "Why don't you use your brains?" etc.

The naive imagine the bosses need training or HR inptus. In reality, frequently the bosses purposely do this to break a person's self confidence & self esteem, so that the person remains personally subservient to the boss for the rest of their c

Just as the way you described Bullying just did not start and end at college. It was tyhere at home all the time ( never had a good conversation even with the old man at home), and then form the boys in the neighbourood (none to play with or none to invite to play), college, work place and everywhere. The only thing that I have for company now at my 40s is a music instruemnt as in the case of Clementi. I can understand why and what could have pushed Clementi to jump off the bridge. Clementi was tlaneted violinist. He felt rejected by the world around. And the college going kids or even adults in India wont understad this.

The sentence was too light
by Jai Babu on May 23, 2012 01:35 PM  | Hide replies

He invaded a room mate's privacy and filmed his private moments. Whatever the room mate's sexua1 preferences be, Dharun Ravi had no business engaging in this voyeuristic task. And he has shown no remorse whatsoever. He needs to spend time in American jail with a a mean big brothaas prison gang giving him the TREATMENT!
