Once upon a Time..
by Suraesh Singh on Jun 17, 2012 05:11 AM  | Hide replies

A man was walking through the jungle, when he noticed a female wolf attacking a baby fox and family of fox crying and screaming some distance away. The man attacked the wolf with an axe and killed her, but before dying the wolf told the man, I did not posed any threat to you, so why did you killed me ? If you think you have done a good work by killing me, then think again!

Before your only sin could have been to ignore cries of help from a weak stranger in distress but now you have become a bigger sinner. I got my hungry babies waiting for me, without me they will die and you will be directly responsible for death of those weak creatures and will be cursed by them!

Moral of the story, if you don’t know anything about the situation and got nothing to do with fighting parties, then the best way for interference is, try to restrain all sides from further violence instead of picking one-side over another.

Assad Government can be pressurised by diplomatic means and threat of International laws and the rebels can be pressurised by making it clear to them, that they are not getting any outside help for armed resistance.

Ordinary Syrians on the streets know best about their circumstances and situation and if outsiders hold good intentions for all Syrians, then their aim should be to pressurise them to stop violence and start talking with each other, about “How to co-exist?” and create environment for peace.

Outsiders backing for revolts in Egypt and Libya was easy, Egyptian proved that they all are united for democracy irrespective of their differences.

Libyan rebels took control of half of the country in few weeks and a big chunk of Gadafi army defected and they proved to the world beyond reasonable doubt that majority of people are with them and Gadafi is holding to power with gun only. Also Gadafi did not helped his own cause by claming that their will be no negotiations and plan a,b,c is to fight till death.

Anyway situation in Syria is different, Democracy is run by at least 60% people although voting different parties but united/committed in having faith in system of Democracy and are able to overcome challenges from unpractical/unsustainable fringe ideas.

On the other hand, Dictatorship require at least 25-30% people committed in supporting one dictator or one party and being able to overcome all challengers. Only Syrians know, why they are supporting the dictator ? and I respect their judgment, but surviving more than one year of a revolt only means support for dictatorship has not diminished over there.

Taking on a 30% population with force and aggression is a very bad idea and if you try to spread Democracy that way, then your ideology also become like any other aggressive ideology, which is trying to be the Boss on the planet. You will face stiff resistance and have burn outs and finally will be consigned to the dustbin of history.

So follow the path of least conflict, ask Assad to give concessions which can lay the path for democracy in future. Democracy is about the rule of majority, so give all people time to think about pros/cons of Democracy and convince each other for it.

Also due to current conflict lot of bad blood and hate has been created between neighbours and ordinary people and it will take some time to settle, in the mean time un-diminished Security apparatus will be required to maintain order and security for everyone.

For long term healing, all groups should give up the idea that they can get rid of each other with force, whether they like it or not, they are their together and are neighbours and have to see each other face everyday, it’s a bitter truth and they cannot ignore/escape it.

So only peaceful way forward is co-existence and mutual understanding, rather than living in fear/suspicion of each other all the time, try to create environment of mutual assurances and understanding and wherever possible tolerance of each other shortcomings and difference of opinion.

It is the Alawites versus the Sunnis in Syria
by Suhas on Jun 13, 2012 04:57 PM

The war in Syria is between the Alawites and the Sunnis. Assad belongs to the Alawite clan. For centuries, they were oppressed by the majority Sunnis in Syria. They could only live with dignity after Hafez Assad came to power in the 70s. Every major official in the Syrian government and the military is Alawite. Today in Syria, the Sunni rebels come out with cries like 'Send the Christians to Beirut, and the Alawites to the coffin'. The Sabiha militia that carries out the attrocities are also all Alawites. For them, it is imperative to indulge in all that, else the Sunnis will do the same to them. The perverted rules of existence in the middle east (except in Israel and Turkey) call upon one to either kill or be killed. How much more comfortable are we in the West, India and other parts of the world! Doubtless we have have our own problems, but at least it is not imperative for us to kill anyone else to ensure our own survival!

Syrian crises
by Samir Bhagwat on Jun 13, 2012 01:37 PM  | Hide replies

like the iraqi crises, libyan crises etc. all started by vested western and saudi interests. they have no compassion for the millions who are going to be displaced and the hunger and misery that will follow like in Libya, Egypt etc.
