in 1997, the hitherto self-appointed 'queen' of Indian English writers, Ms. Shoba De, turned permanently green with envy!
And in her extreme pique, she snapped at a journalist who asked her opinion about it by saying "It is a freak thing that happened" !
Later, Shoba De tried to apply salve on her mind that was sore with jealousy by repeatedly suggesting to anyone who would listen that the Indian mind is still servile to the white man's icons since he gives importance to the prizes such as the Booker given out by him!
The same Shobha De shamelessly expressed her delight in public when Cambridge university adopted one of her short stories for an academic course in English!!
It is another matter that Cambridge university routinely adopts the writings of numerous little known authors from across the English speaking world in their 'Panorama of world literature'!!
