Empower the citizen through awareness, knowledge and action
by hawkeye on Dec 31, 2012 05:53 PM  | Hide replies

Creation of constant public awareness is the key to efficacy in political, legal ,bureacratic and policing reforms.

It is the duty of the common citizen to educate himself or herself in what is happening in the country so as to take intelligent action, which is the starting point of all progress.

The world is a dangerous place, not because of the people who are evil , but because of the people who do not do anything about it. -- Albert Einstein

If the citizens do not empower themselves with knowledge and intelligent action, which is a duty in itself, they will be taken for a ride by not just the criminal elements, but also by the government as well.

Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom. -- Thomas Jefferson

Why will govt allow change?
by Grizzly on Dec 31, 2012 04:40 PM

How can the gggovttt allow change to come?

congras and its allies are well settled, their seats are secure and they are busy making money and filling their swwwwiiss accounts! Everything is going smooth! Why would they allow any change?

The Lokpal bill hasnt been passed and no anti-corruption measures have been taken. gggovtt has managed to pass time and make everybody forget about corruption.

Before that people were angry about tterroriism and Mmumbaai attacks. ggggovtttt managed to pass time on that too.

These days the people are angry about crimes in our streets. And the gggovtttt is passing time again!

All this ggggovtttt does is pass time! They are never serious about change and will never do anything to change things!

The only thing that will change things is to channge this ggggovttt and tthroow it out of powwer!

Tougher punishment will not stop rapes.....its a myth
by Dhananjay Kumar on Dec 31, 2012 04:29 PM  | Hide replies

Prevention is better than cure.
Along with a few other factors, the increasing number of rapes can be related to increasing modernity and glamour in society too. Even western countries with one of best police and judiciary system have surprisingly high number rape incidents. But feminists and feminist media is turning a blind eye to this. WTF, just hang the rapist. Already there are many anti-men laws which are being misused by women in India.

The modern women and society should understand a basic rule - every action has equal and opposite reaction. It just so happens that the victim of this reaction is not the one who took wrong action (vulgar exposure in society), but some poor vulnerable girl/lady. So this "action" should be curbed first.

Its high time the modern women (feminists) ask themselves - don't they have brother/father/husband?

Its high time the indian parents teach their daughter too some discipline and to respect the men in society, and not to just go on exposure rampage. Why can't they respect the men or society and act/dress decently? If you think you can do whatever you want and then that "action" leads to a reaction of which unfortunately a poor vulnerable women become victim.

Lack of quality policing and leadership is the main issue...
by hawkeye on Dec 31, 2012 04:21 PM

Both the rape incident and the subsequent ill-treatment of the protesting students are major reflections of the shortcomings and lack of quality of the Indian police force.

What is truly needed at the moment is the revamping of India's police force and upgrading them both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Good law and order is the foundation of a healthy and prosperous society and a developed nation. And this can be enforced effectively only with a professional, well-led, well-trained, well-equipped and well-resourced police force.

The inability to proactively prevent the rape incident, and actions of the police forces against the protestors only reflected their shortcomings in training and resources, and this is why the law and order in the country is in shambles.

Increase police to population ratio...
by hawkeye on Dec 31, 2012 04:20 PM  | Hide replies

The major reason for all the lack of law and order in India is simply this : the police to population ratio is just 130 per 100000 people, well below the minimum police strength of 222 per 100000 people recommended by the UN.

Law and order is needed for healthy progress of the country in all sectors, and this is essentially provided by a good and effective police force.

All developed and progressive nations have a very good police to population ratio. France (356), Germany (298 ),Great Britain( 307 ), U.S.A (256),Spain (511),Belgium(373), Malaysia (370),Singapore(752) are examples.

Good law and order ensures a healthy society and a good background for economic development as well for obvious reasons.

If India aspires to be a developed nation, it should first increase the police to population ratio from its measly 130 at present to at least the UN recommended minimum police strength of 222.

Otherwise all these crimes and protests will keep on happening without any end at sight.

The Indian government need not get tense and worried about the costs of maintaining a 222 strong police to population ratio, as the strong economic development that comes with good law and order will more than compensate for the greater investment in the policing sector.
