I am just curious at the "knowing confidence" with which you made the statement in favour of police!
My apprehension to your statement roots from the stories of police atrocities heard from practically every nook and cranny of our country, the recent most talked of fiasco involving Baba Ramdev at Ramlila grounds.
One of the outstanding reforms of police forces as ordered by Supreme Court in 2006 contain creation of Police Complaints Authority to investigate misconduct of police officers and other forces. I am under no illusion that it will be as good as Internal Affair (US) or Independent Police Complaints Commission (UK); however it will be at-least first step in that direction. Big question is "when" such authority will be created by state governments?
In democracy, politicians should demand answers from Police officers when complained by citizens. However in India police is used by politicians as puppet to do many illegal activities for politicians. This means politicians are then reluctant to take action against police offers for their misconduct.
I hope police complaints authority is established without need for another Anna Hazare.

if you break law, no one is gonna convict you for a long time also high chance you can pay to get the investigation screwed up the time has come to open courts that deal with police brutality and corruption in lower / middle level offciers once we start independent investigation with time bound closures, these powers to be will fear justice Anna and others must focus on police reforms , police and CBI need to be monitored proactively .. need the media to take up these issues and force govt to act if a journo is treated this way what hope do we have

Srinagar is not an exception. When it comes to brutish behavior, police all over India is more or less the same. Recently, there was a jewelery heist in Bangalore and the police over there arrested and tortured many innocent people of the Nepali community. It seems they did this as a strategy to lure out the real culprit (as if criminals have any conscience). With police like this, it is no wonder that terrorists are not being caught.

Same is the story all over India, and it's just not Nepalis but ordinary honest citizens that the cops take delight in trobling, be it in any village, city, town, state or Union Territory of India. After Politicians, it should be cops who should be punished legally for all their misdeeds, especially the brutality...
Few years ago Mr Druze the world famous economist & a close associate of Dr Amartya sen was mauled with similar savagery by security forces.A TV journalist of a major Bengali TV channel was almost beaten to death by CRPF jawans because of his attempt to take photos of few dead security men due to a naxalite made explosion at Lalgarh, Bengal. Experiences of Mr Devadas, Mr Druze & innumerable others publicized or not only tell us how pathetically true are grim stories of Manorama & thousands of raped women in the north east , Kashmir & even elsewhere by the Heroes in uniform.Along borders of West Bengal berserk BSF accounts for maximum human rights violation against civilians which has made them more detested than the cross border smugglers & anti-socials.Raping of tribal women in naxalite infested areas by CRPF is another ghastly reality.Nothing more alienates the public from the state as does state sponsored terrorism & the war against separatism gets lost when the common public en mass shuns the government.If kashmir, Nagaland & Assam are lost cases to India the credit should go not to extraneous terrorism from Pakistan or China but actually to the brutality of a section of security forces who often chooses to behave like an occupying foreign force or organized group of hardcore criminals rather than protector of the mass.
