These words...

These are the words spoken about Nehru at the time of his death: “…a dream has remained half-fulfilled, a song has become silent, and a flame has vanished into the unknown. The dream was of a world free of fear and hunger; the song a great epic resonant with the spirit of the Gita and as fragrant as a rose; the flame a candle that burnt all night long showing us the way. Nehru was the orchestrator of the impossible and inconceivable; one who was not afraid of compromise but never compromised under duress… that vibrancy and independence of mind, that quality of being able to befriend the opponent and enemy, the gentlemanliness, that greatness marked Nehru. The sun has set, yet by the shadow of the stars, we must find our way.”

The speaker of these words was a certain Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Those who deride Nehru today are not worth a mention.

We only remember a persons positive points after death does not mean that person had no flaws.

Its a pity that Nehru's achievements were systematically squandered away by his successors -- especially his daughter -- and the resultant catastrophes have been blamed on Nehru himself.

If anything, it is Indira and Rajiv Gandhi whose images have been inflated beyond its real relevance.

In hindsight, when the net contribution of Nehru to the country is considered, his flaws pale into insignificance. He made tactical errors, not strategic miscalculations as far as India's course in history is considered.

Quite the opposite, actually. In hindsight, when the net contribution of Nehru to the country is considered, his "achievements" pale into insignificance. It was Nehru who, citing the need to maintain India’s nonviolent reputation, needlessly declared a ceasefire when India was on a winning streak in Kashmir, leaving the northwestern part of the state at the tender mercy of Pakistan. They control it to this day, because Nehru, instead of taking the rest of the state, wanted the UN to force Pakistan to hand it over diplomatically. Nehru stupidly believed that the UN was a fair and impartial body, when it is in fact useless, corrupt, and biased. As a result of pressure from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Kashmir issue remains on the UN’s backburner, and the state, effectively partitioned now, continues to bleed. It was Nehru who, against the entreaties of Sardar Patel, proposed Article 370 which gives Kashmir autonomy from the Indian central government, something that only subordinates the Kashmiri's national identity to their regional one, thus fanning the flames of separatism. It was Nehru who, again against the entreaties of Sardar Patel, handed Tibet to China on a silver platter in 1950, and then sealed the deal with the Panchsheel Agreement, again because of his commitment to Gandhian ahimsa. Then, he was horrified when, after the agreement expired, they took Aksai Chin from India in 1962, which they hold to this day.

Nehru's health never recovered from that; he had a stroke and died two years later. It was Nehru who declined the US' offer of the Republic of China’s UN Security Council seat, insisting that the Communist People's Republic of China, then an international pariah, be given that seat. Nehru should have acted as Tibet's spokesperson on the international stage; instead, he acted as China’s, immediately recognizing their government as the legitimate government of China, when virtually no one else had. Even after they had taken Aksai Chin, he refused to consider their support for North Korea’s attack on South Korea in the Korean War as an act of aggression. He validated China's invasion of Tibet, and made sure that they took the Republic of China's UNSC seat, without even settling the Sino-Indian border dispute in return. Now, China is opposing India’s demand for its own UNSC seat, and violates the Indian border with impunity; China merely took all of Nehru’s support without giving anything substantial in return, despite his naïve, ahimsa driven gestures of goodwill. It is important to note here that Nehru displayed similar reluctance to invade Goa and Hyderabad, and it was Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel who was at least able to convince him into avoiding similar blunders there also.
