THE COALITION CONUNDRUMS
by damodaran mohan on Nov 08, 2011 04:34 PM

Although we take a lot of pride in being known as a mature democracy but the fact remains the coalition govt. still appear to be in the experimental stage. The mature inter-party chemistry between the main party and its associate parties in national interest appear a causality because of party interest taking precedence over public interest. Of the three recent govts., it must be admitted that the NDA govt. led by AB Vajpayee looks least damaging to national interest with UPA-II looking worst managed the way C-party has been successful in browbeating and dominating the coalition partners very visibly. In fact DMK has been virtually reduced to a helpless and vulnerable caricature partner at the mercy of centre brought about by a long rope given to it for indulging in scams to benefit family members. Although NCP and TMC are not in that bad position but they also have been tamed sufficiently by the queen mother through the carrot and stick method. On the other hand UPA-I looked real contrast with the Left front not just holding the coalition itself into ransom at times but even claiming to be able to make the PM do sit/stand ups. But now we realize how still the LEFT’s control was only “phantom” as it could not stop the centre from indulging in large scale corruption. Given this background we can only hope the allies get to have more meaningful say to safeguard national interest.

no pull out
by Hemant Naik on Nov 08, 2011 04:25 PM

It is a drama by Mamata to get more money to her party from the fuel lords. She made the same noise last time. Nothing happened later as she said in democracy it happens. Again price rise, she shouts and gets money from fuel lords and keeps quite. If more price hike next month, she will never speak as the money is given this month will last for quite some time. I bet on this
