Krittika
by Nirpinder Singh on May 27, 2011 01:38 PM

All right folks, that is enough fun and games! This is not a soap opera. Please remember that this girl has sued the City of New York for $1.5 Million. Since people over there take wrongful arrest seriously she is likely to be richer by 7-8 Crore Rupees at the very least. If this were India she might have had to spend a night in Jail, and be properly thankful if released without being charged, and of course without any hope of any recompense whatsoever. So please keep things in perspective!

This seems to be a new game played some of the bigots, arresting people of silly indiscretions. Australians took it to one extreme and started physically hurting and killing Indian students. Now the new trend in America seems to be to arrest and harass Indians since their other trick of projecting hindu extremism has failed.

In fact, an 65 year-old father of an acquaintance of mine was arrested and kept in jail for one whole night, for literring in New York. His crime was he threw away a flyer handed to him and he did not have his passport handy for ID.

One of my relative on a business visit was handed a ticket for throwing a cigarette bud and asked to be physically in court after 2 months. It does not matter that he would be returning to India the next week. It also does not matter that thousands of people walking the streets were littering in front of the same officer. Many law-makers, enforcers (police, judge etc..) in th US themselves hide behind law to practise their bigotry and enjoy the discomfort of non-whites.

A few years back some states in the US were targetting cars driven by Indians and were doling out tickets for all kinds of offense.

There are many great things about US - no doubt. There are also many bigots in critical positions. This is also a fact.

She should be in jail if she has been sending obscene emails -which I am sure she must have as these people in India believe they own the world rich albeit illegally made and spoilt .In India they have their own laws .US should investigate and put her behind if the truth is she has sent such mails.

If the kid was an ordinary NRI's kid

Just because that girl was some vice counsel's kid the embassy worked overnight waking up American officials but if the same thing happened to a hapless ordinary NRI kid the embassy would not even take phone calls from the affected party.

that's totally understandable ... the NRIs in USA are not on GOI business.

We are here for our own selfish reasons like more money and better quality of life and so, we should accept what comes with it.

Now, getting arrested for something is not too bad in USA. It's not like you get raped or get third degree beating in lockup, like it happens routinely in India

Agreed we might be overseas for better quality of life but it responsibility of GoI to provide consular services to every citizen, as long as we hold Indian Passport we are entitled to get those services. But expecting anything reasonable from GoI doesn't help!

if we really believed that GOI which is made of people like you and me is as good as the US fed or state govts, then we would probably not be here ... we must admit that India has fewer resources and larger responsibility in terms of people to support

entitlement may be there, but dont expect the same level of attention that an American citizen gets from his govt/embassy when abroad, b/c that will only disappoint you

strong Indian
by Jaganath Bharat on May 26, 2011 10:57 PM  | Hide replies

Indians have a strong case from every viewpoint. This is not about diplomatic immunity, it is about liability, guilt and human rights. Even to the extent that diplomatic immunity applies (by virtue of being a high-school dependent of Indian Consular office) India stands a strong and legitimate case. US' been caught with pants down and they're going to have to pay.

Human rights & Individual rights are violated more in China and US violates the same by closing its eyes to this sin. Lets remind US of their responsibility.

this wasn't a violation of human rights ... unless the girl was beaten or raped or denied food or medical attention
