I think Kerala voters do not have any thing to be proud about. You are saying that the slight margin of the UDF is the result of a lack ofother options. Kerala is so hopelessly politicised a state that there is no thought of anything out side the UDF LDF axes. People are not even ready to think of a third option! Dr K Parameswaran, Kozhikode.

Mairata Bannerjee's alliance won
by piri on May 20, 2011 10:05 AM  | Hide replies

227 out of 294 seats and the left front just 62.

That makes the ratio of seats 77:21

The vote share for Mairata's grand alliance with Congress is 48 % and the left front's is 42 %

Where is 77:21 and where is 48:42 ??

'First-past-the-post' system has given the Congress led front an even narrower 'victory' in Kerala !

A mere 6 % difference in vote share has led to Mairata gaining a 56 % lead in the no. of seats (and consequently on the quantum of grip on power) !

Here some comments abusing congress for their Christian muslim alliance. Some facts for their Information! 1.      There was a Christian & muslim alliance in congress in this election. (Interesting fact: Congress was most worried about it. (They know they will loss hindu votes. So they tried to prevent the Christian kerala congress merge & joining in UDF). 2.      Lower caste Christians votes for CPM also. 3.      Upper caste Christians votes for BJP also. (Do you know there was a minister in Vajpaye Government. (He was a Christian candidate from BJP). He was one & only elected candidate of BJP from kerala yet. 4.      Muslim league is far better than other radical out puts like jama-e-islami, Popular Front, PDP etc.(In fact it is act as buffer zone preventing muslims from radicalism (to some extent) 5.      In last election Upper caste hindus (Nairs) openly support congress. They said that they support congress to prevent VS Achutanadan from power. Do you know he is a lower caste hindu (Ezhava).

The christian candidate from Kerala was P C Thomas. And he represented the Kerala Congress (T). He was not from the BJP; just that his party was in alliance with the NDA.

Why Polarisation of Votes
by ramesh kumar on May 19, 2011 11:27 AM

In 2006 assebmly election IUML won only 06 out of 24 seats. it shows that minority in Kerala had full faith in LDF / UDF govt. but due to lack of economic upliftment of minorities by state govt compelled minorities to look for thier own party for economic upliftment. in result, IUML won 20 out of 24 seats in 2011 election. Similary xains party won 16 seat in same assebmly election..

Nitish Kumar is a gud example of democratic governance in Bihar, india.. people of bihar have voted him without any polarisation due to his impartial development of all section of society.

some more issues
by Venkatesh Umapathy on May 19, 2011 10:49 AM

Dear Mr. Shenoy,
Your analysis is correct. But as for my state ( Tamil Nadu), you have to note the following facts.
1) Tamil Nadu has never returned a fractured verdict. In fact it was only in 2006 Jaylalitha did not have to suffer a total wash out despite having had to face a combined opposition.
2) The Tamil Nadu congress president made a mockery of the electorate. His wife filed an "incomplete" nomination and later on he filed his own. You are the state unit leader of a major political party which is the head of the ruling coalition. How can you hope to fool the people like this ?
3) 2G, shady land deals and many others made "corruption charges" against Jayalalitha look miniscule.
4) Jayalalitha did have the prespicacity to strike an alliance with Vijayakanth at the right time.
5) Donnot overlook one more record. Jayalalitha is the first Chief minister to be reinstated on the throne after having tasted a personal defeat. She was defeated in Bargur and today she is back as chief minister. Kamaraj and Bhakthavatsalam were former chief ministers who were personally defeated in their respective constituencies. But both of them went into political oblivion after the defeat.
6) The congress cannot go to the people and say despite corruption charges , DMK is an ally. You are aligning with a party whose minister had been directly involved in what is by far India's biggest scam and is jailed for the scandal and still yo

TVR Shenoy plays it both ways!!
by Sunil G on May 19, 2011 10:36 AM

Mr. Shenoy feels the voters are smart when the results match to his liking. Else he blasts the voters for being naive and foolish!! Way to go Mr. Shenoy. Ideally your name should be TVR Shenanigan!! The abbreviation would still be the same.

there is no surprise element in results!
by naresh sehgal on May 19, 2011 06:05 AM  | Hide replies

Poll pundits are analysing funnily these surprise less poll results. In Tamilnadu where anti congressism and may be slight aversion to North India is the theme; voters have only two corrupt alternatives : AIIDMK and DMK whom they rotate alternatively.Present DMK rulers have broken all past records on corruption so they were naturally to be replaced by people of Tamilnadu/Puduchery.

Indian Muslims (constituting sizable population in W Bengal/Kerala /Assam ) as a game plan vote either COMMIES or COngis group parties to extract maximum say ,although Commie/congi group parties foolishly think that they are exploiting/fooling Muslims getting their Solid VOTE BANK. In fact it is other way around as Muslim leadership through shifting their Vote bank between the two make them dance to their tunes.Commies have angered Muslim clergy so have been taught a lesson by Muslims. It is nothing like anti Commie vote.It is the same VOTE Bank game plan in which this time utterly communal congis pleased Muslim clergy by aligning with Muslim league and co - their old masked buddies since 1947 partition of India.Next time it can be other way round if congis did not properly lick boots (of course congis are masters in it )of Muslim fanatic leader ship ;who after creation of Pakistan laughingly through oldie congis like Jinnah,Ali brothers etc etc are now dreaming like Osama the medieval come back of terror and law less ness in world courtsey power greed of commie/congi group parties.

Wow, I agree 100%. Congress has played the same mus1im vote bank policies during 2009 elections by promising 4% reservations to Mus1ims in all governments and educational institutions.

Unless middle class educated hindus realise and start voting India will soon get his new name " Is1amic Replublic of India".

Satya s,

You are so dumb in your understanding. Religion has played a bigger role in politics not just in India but in several countries.

You need to understand how our politicians are play the religion game to win votes.

You and you entire family need to go to LKG to learn from basics. On at least earn something to travel to different countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc and see it urself.

IF you cannot offered that much then at least try to travel within india and see places like Kashmir, Assam, Kerala and pick purely mus1im dominated areas. Make sure you travel with your female family members .

If that's the case, the magic number is 740 votes.
Because, if you move these votes you actually subtract from one and add to the other.
