PRIVATIZE
by lax yopr on Jun 03, 2011 08:47 PM  | Hide replies

THe answer is to privatize.
This is what the western countries have done, and look at the results.
TATAs, AMbanis, L&T, Birlas, GOdrej etc have the managerial capability to do it.
Governments cant even run a dairy business properly.

Pipavav has just become the first India Private Port to build Frigates/Destroyers/Aircraft Carrier class warships.
Its a good sign - more private ports should be allowed to build warships - and get the inefficient govt to clear out its mess

Indegenisation vs.imports
by premshanker gupta on Jun 03, 2011 08:34 PM

Our preferences for imports appear to be guided by our unending greeds to build up Swiss Bank accounts and that is the reason that India is the top account holder in Swiss and other foreign banks.Corruption and sheer corruption is eating away everything we have.
The countries wherefrom we are importing defence equipments worked hard and honestly to develop their capabilities in national interest. But seemingly we have interntional interest and therefore we devised ways of not indigenising those equipments. Traitors appear to have creeped into our system and they need to be pruned to save our nation. When other nation can develop any system, we can also as there is dearth of talents here. Simply we need visionary and honest ruling community.

Kudos to the reporter! Really Nice story!

All the technological advancement we talk about in our country is nothing but trying to emulate what have been developed in US. The IT companies in india are just providing service to US banks, they are not developing or researching on anything. So if US market goes down it hits hard on Indian IT sector. Similarly our pharma companies are copying drugs from foreign labs, as India have weak patent laws, they get away easily. Many drugs which have been long banned in developed countries are openly being sold in India. The sea-link build in Mumbai is called as engineering marvel but such construction was done in US 50 years ago. We lag behind everywhere! A lot is needed to be done but our leaders are not what we can say in Jairam ramesh's terms 'world-class'!

Want to be a world power?
by Suresh Bhave on Jun 03, 2011 08:15 PM

We have been saying that we are on the way to becoming an economic world power. There is nothing like an economic world power, there is only military power ultimately. We must undertake expansion of the armed forces as did China so that economies of scale may be achieved in production of the materials and components to make their production profitable. It is the matter of make or buy and we still find it cheaper to buy. Besides, there cannot be kickback in dollars if things are made at home and not imported. That is also a key factor in decisions made by Babus in the government.

Absolutely disagree

Desi or Videshi...if you buy a warship in Russia, Italy, France or China...they all use imported parts and systems...this is the age of global trade...thats it. Stop complaining about desi or not...just assemble here. Chinese assemble electronics by parts made in Japan and America. America assemble cars by components made in Canada, Mexico and Japan.

You are missing the point. Why do you think our defense minister wants indigenous equipment in first place? It is because in defense sector you should be self-established and not dependent on others. If relations with US go bad at a later stage and it stops supply of repair equipment, then what? You become dependent and its not good for defense sector!

indigenisation
by Batao Na on Jun 03, 2011 03:37 PM

First of all people pick wrong examples for ALH Dhruv less then 100 helicoptors were ordered over almost a decade. Does it even makes sense to set assembly lines for each and every component ?

I am sure cost will shoot up if these morons insist of every component being Desi.

Instead of worrying about indeginious of foreign why don't they contract warship building to private sector like South Korea did ?
Hyndai Heavy Engineering is one of the largest ship builders including VLCC containers and they also build warships and frigates.
As long as they keep dedicated defense production units with small volumes nothing much will happen.

import makes chance for corruption !!!!
by Discusion Forum on Jun 03, 2011 03:31 PM

Import of materials pave way for corruption. So officials prefer to import the materails and equipments rather than indigenization.

Metallurgy - Material Scientists needed
by slater on Jun 03, 2011 02:57 PM  | Hide replies

This is one of the key areas in the defense arena. If we cannot produce world class scientists in these areas we are screwed. Every SOB wants to get into a CS course and become a clerk or peon in a MNC. No one wants to test the boundaries of material science, bcos, it is difficult and the returns are absymal in India. I request the Indian govt to incentivise the materials area so that Private sector can dig in. If there are no benefits TATA or BIRLA is not going to get there. I dont think Lockeed Martin is going to part with their rocket science any time soon. Privitize materials research ".".
