A LOOT OF OCIs BY GOVT. OF INDIA !
by majid qureshi on Jul 07, 2011 06:52 AM  | Hide replies

In abt. 2003, Govt. of India offered PIO status ( Persons of Indian Origin ) to NRIs who had opted for foreign nationalities to save them from multiple hassels of Visa to India and renewals. Then later on OVERSEAS CITIZENSHIP OF INDIA was offered with similar but broader purposes. That costed Abt.280.00 dollars, Or.Abt.15K Rupees. Then all of a sudden there came to light a MINISTRY OF NRIs ! and Mr. Ravi Valayar is the minsiter of it. A proclamation was issued that those Inians who opted for forein nationalities should also obtain a RENUNCIATION OF INDIAN CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATE. That would cost additional $212.00, so OCI RENUNCIATION CERTIFICATE combined cost is Abt.$500.00 or roughly Rs.25K.

One woners why there is a need of RENUNCIATION CERTIFICATE even after OCI is granted ? OCI itself cearly means an Overseas Citizen of India, already. This OCI has restricted rights. So it means that CITIZENSHIP OF INIA IS ALREADY RENOUNCED. If necessary a line can be added in OCI booklet saying that Indian Citizenship Renounced. Why another Separate Applcation for Renunciation ? That costs extra paper work and an extra payment of $212.00 ! If one million people opt for foreign ntionalities, they will pay govt. of India abt. Rs.2500 crores....Well done Mr. Manmohansingh, SM Krishna, PC sir ! you got the expenses and salaries of Mr. Ravi paid up for at least 10 yrs.!

Oh yaa.. Couriers FEDEX charges are abt.Rs,2500.oo per application . A PERFECT LOOT ?

Mr. Qureshi is right ! I paid $.2000.00 for 4 applications of my family. The work is outsourced, ( as if govt. India cant do this very sensitive work by itself ) and if I phone there no answer. It can take from 40 ro 180 days. Untill then you have to put off your immergencies to visit a sick father or imp.business meetings.

And you know what ? That Renunciation Certificate, is a sheet of plain paper with typed text...and a govt. stamp, just like those TALUKA CERTIFICATE ....

For this they charge abt.$200.00 and a wait of 6 months....

They behave as nicely as babus behave in India....and yet claim...India is a Super Power..!!!

Is this not a loot ? Such high charges?

It's a big loot, but besides that it is the very typical hassle that was supposed to be done away with by using OCI/PIO. Since these rules were introduced and enforced in an overdue, poor and substandard manner, many people already lost their naturalisation papers. So even if they have the money, they cannot produce the papers, or details of so and so old passports. Let us not forget, photocopies/scanners were not so prevalent a few decades ago, besides that photocopies do not last so long. Many do not even have their original birth certificate anymore.

Exactly.
Why they are not using a web based online platform?
They should learn from Irish eGov.

Indian government offices have underdeveloped IT infrastructure. Every major government (especially in the west) automatically reports a change in citizenship to India if the Indian becomes naturalised to foreign. All this information should already be in the Indian official databases. Even otherwise they can know if any Indian (or ex-Indian) has ever applied for an Indian passport. This is official information, and if it has been mishandled domestically, why bother ordinary civilians with this? The rules anyway should only be enforced in a case where reasonable doubt/suspicion occurs, not in a general (blanket) manner. Only genuine suspects should be bothered, not everyone.
