TVM’s name to be Changed!!!
by Draupati Raman on Jul 12, 2011 05:36 PM  | Hide replies

Trivandrum being the centre of attraction of the world now, we would propose a change in name of the city in respect of Sree Anantha Padmanabhan to “THIRU ANANTHA PURI” which means the place where sree anantha padmanabhan stays.

Yes, daupti, Strange why no one comments about looting and genocides conducted by vatican and agents for past 1000 years and more??? How many hindus and world citizens know how much christian and church invaders from europe paid to red indians and aborigines& indigneouts people in america, canda, australia, new zealand, etc? Just less than 10000 dllars for whole of USA, canada, asutralia&new zealand before eliminating the red indians and aborogines&their cultures forever, too. Now one sq foot of land in new yourk or ottawa or sydney or auckland coast more than 20000 dollars, so imagine folks who are the greatest looters&dacoits and murderers of all time??? Surely NOT Hindus, right???

NOBLE ACTS GOING ON AT HYDRABAD
by BHARATIYAN on Jul 11, 2011 12:39 AM  | Hide replies

So far, the grooms were largely from Gulf countries such as Oman or Saudi Arabia, usually middle-aged and always rich. They would sign a “contract” for marriage with a Muslim teenager in Hyderabad, paying her needy family between Rs 50,000 and Rs 2 lakh, and then dump her after a short honeymoon and fly home. Now, the agents behind such contracts have expanded their scope to include foreign students, usually East African. Like the Arabs, they too dump their young brides when they go home, with a clause in the contract specifying that the marriage ends when it is time to leave.“The clause is in fine print, or on a blank paper that the girl unknowingly signs and which is later used to terminate the marriage,” says M S Sami, assistant secretary of the state Waqf Board, which issues marriage certificates for Muslims and is now scanning several “suspicious marriages”.

The temple records clearly establish that the vast majority
by piri on Jul 10, 2011 11:42 PM  | Hide replies

of the high value items found in the vaults were kept there by the royals of erstwhile Travancore state. Few commoners or even members of the aristocracy could have afforded such items as 'donation'.

Now, how did such a huge treasure come to be possessed by the kings ? Historian K.N Panikkar as well as others are near unanimous that the sources were high taxes or indemnity ('kappam') imposed on vassal lords. High taxes were imposed on land, agriculture and trade and extremely heavy taxes were levied for the trade of items such as ivory, timber and spices. The original sources of all the gold and precious gems were mostly from other kingdoms of the sub-continent.

The Travancore rajahs and ranis, just like their counterparts of other kingdoms of India and in other parts of the world, enjoyed power at the pinnacle of an extremely exploitative feudal order. In feudalism, the fruits of labour of a vast section were mostly enjoyed by a small crust that constituted the aristocracy (in which the king took the lion's share). Thus a thin idle section lived lives of luxury using the wealth created by the toil and drudgery of the miserable majority.

The kings and nobles hoarded a good part of the wealth earned through such usuriousness.

There were several ways in which such hoarding was done (including keeping a part of the wealth with powerful but friendly rajahs of neigbouring kingdoms). But the chief means of hoarding was to hide a good part of the wealth in temples to be watched over by the ever loyal allies of the kings - select members of the priestly class. This was a very clever move; temples enjoyed that extra measure of security owing to commoners' devotion to the presiding deity and the resulting wariness of probable thieves. Whenever the rajah or his descendants needed to use a part of the wealth, all they had to do was to take it out from the temple cellars (even this act of taking out part of the treasure was shrouded in elaborate rituals!).

Though feudalism was the order of the day in those ages and commoners were not enlightened or emboldened enough to challenge it, there is little reason for the Indian citizen of today to forget the source of all that wealth and proceed to be fooled into thinking that it should now be considered as 'temple wealth'.

For those who look at this issue from a 'hindu/muslim' angle, there is also the 'Nizam's treasure' to consider. The latter was also earned and hoarded in exactly the same manner as the wealth found in the temple was.

It may be convenient for some small sections to make it out that the Rajahs and ranis of yore were 'benevolent'. But what ought to be the chief focus of commoners is that the wealth belongs to them after all!

Your assumptions have no basis. There is no evidence temple wealth is used for royal spending.
