Women in the Indian Army: An idea whose time has arrived
by Gopalakrishnan Govindarajan on Jan 18, 2011 09:33 AM

Women in the Defence Forces - rather than the Indian Army would be more appropriate to discuss here. I wonder , some of those who comment about this topic have really seen these officers working in the defence? They are like four blind people describing an elephant from four different sides !

There are Women Nurses and Women Doctors in the Defence. There are Women officers in other branches of the Army, Airforce and the Navy. They are equally competent as comared to the men and in some cases mentally more capable than men.

When we have no sex discrimination in other jobs - be it Govt, Corporate, Airlines, Aero Space - why differentiate here?

This shows lack of confidence on the part of some MCPs.

Our country's President - and the Supreme Commander of the Army, Air Force and Navy is also a Woman.......what has these people who are nothing more than a MCP have to say about this?

I may sound like a male chauvinist ....
by Tom Dick on Jan 17, 2011 08:06 PM  | Hide replies

I may sound like a male chauvinist but the fact is that under the slightest provocation, these female soldiers will scream of male domination. They may even implicate others in sex scandals. The rules are all in favour of females and not for males. If a woman doesn't want to obey an order given by a male officer, she could complain that he was misbehaving with her and the male officer will be in trouble. So it will be interesting to watch the fun.

Pak should be nuked first. to avenge torture of Lt Kaalia.
by jaggu on Jan 16, 2011 03:10 PM

Our Past PM Morarji Desai committed to blow up Pakistan if they got nukes - but current PM is defaulting on the idea and as a result the war is dragging on. These foolish ideas like exposing women in battle zones need a safer approach after experience of Late Lt. Kaalia.

Even Darling Raul Baba gets 40000 policemen security to travel on Mumbai surface.

Women soldiers

It is fancy to have women soldiers in Indian Army, however they pose a great inconvenience to army being a female.Instead, they are a botheration to take care of them at each & every step. Since their induction in recent years they are in the limelight simply for sex scandals but not for their bravery or achievements in the Army. What i understand that they are only good for serving senior officer. Review for induction when the men are a unemployed lot in this country.

Great Thoughts take time

It is a great thought to include women as warriors in the Indian army. But first things first...we need to understand that physical fitness is the major factor that contributes to the success of a person in a battle field. we also need to understand the basic reality that men are physically stronger than women and hence have better fitness levels and ability to withstand and overcome pain in real combat situations. It is not that women are disabled or they are weak but it only means that this is what comes naturally to men. Let us consider any sport in which both men and women take part. The skill levels of both men and women would be same (few cases women have better skills than men) but the standards laid are not same. for example In the game of tennis women play a best of three sets game but men play a best of five sets game.
Men are naturally endowed with more muscle mass than females. Since a man of the same weight will have more muscles than a woman weighing the same, men generally have better metabolism than women. So men will get fitter with lesser exercise when compared to women.
In a battle field unlike sport, women may have to fight men. So i believe it takes a lot of time and effort to train women who are as competent as a fully built male soldier and who are ready to go to the battle field.

too risky

current experiments are successful since they are experiments. That is not right. equal opportunity also means equal work load where the women should be given the same work as of man in the harsh environment and see the sucess...seriously i dont think there is any reason by which a woman cannot become a combatant soldier provided she is physically fit.But at a collective level the physical requirement to survive harshest condition can be sometimes very demanding. Also it means complete restructuring of the army's fabric, which is too risky. of course as we progress we may reach a stage at which our society really becomes gender unbiased or we become technohigh that individual combatant doesnt matter, but till then changing the fabric is too risky.
Even with the most technologically advanced army in the world, the US army who goes by the theatre defence strategy in networked environment the debate of inducting combatant women is still ongoing. India who is notoriously patriarchial, and the traditional warfare goes by the old style of combat at section level, it is too too early to induct women in combat.

Arent there sufficient areas in the army where women can be used if not exclusively, like the education corps, signals, intelligence etc?

it is not a question of equality, rather it is a fascination of a few generals, and an ego factor for the activists.
For, with the modern medicine even man can become pregnant, but the question is whether it is necessary or suitabl

nice thought but women who comes with her own interest in army will never say no to any harsh environment.... thier will power will lead them to face any environment....it will happen by the selection committee while they recruit right person.
