DC-3’s at Sulur Airbase, Coimbatore?
by Lee Sun on Mar 05, 2011 03:38 AM  | Hide replies

Perhaps a reader can enlighten us on something we saw on a trip to Coimbatore, India in 1982-83. In the early 1980s, the Coimbatore airport was closed down for runway expansion, to accommodate modern jets like the Boeing 737. The airlines were temporarily, using the nearby Sulur Airbase. At that time, we flew from Delhi to Coimbatore on Indian Airlines. As we rolled down the runway and taxied back to the (limited) terminal, we noticed DC-3s parked among the trees on both sides of the runway. There must have been a hundred of them or more. The grass around each plane was mowed and each plane looked like it could be flown if the trees were not blocking their way. We’ve tried to find out what happened to these planes with no luck. Searching Google Maps for them at Sulur Airbase does not reveal anything. Can anyone advise if these planes are still there? If not, does anyone know what happened to them?
Thanks for your advice.
Lee

Desi's fighter ready for IAF

While this development is gratifying, there is an acute need for India to leapfrog , especially in the background of the fact that we are behind China by three decades . We should strive to bridge this three decade gap in the next three to five years , if we have to meaningfully counter China's rising military threat. I would suggest that India should work hard towards attracting its nationals from NASA and straight away start working on developing fifth generation fighter jets . While this news is definitely a progress, this is not sufficient in the face of grave threat and provocation that we are facing every day in our border with China

4th generation fighter in 5th generation world
by Shailesh Matekar on Jan 12, 2011 02:43 PM

No doubt it is an achievement. But it is kind of late, these kind of fighters are 2 decades old, world has moved on.

China has developed stealth fighter J20. I wonder what takes India so long to bring in advanced technology. Whatever we create becomes outdated (exception Bramhos). All our military hardware is Russian in origin, if not Russia we turn to Israel, another world military power as far as technology is concerned.

why are people so rude
by samit on Jan 12, 2011 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

why are people so rude, disrespectful of authority, uncaring, lack of social sense or hygiene, simple things such as putting garbage in bins at delhi new airport instead of throwing under the seat. what is wrong with people? why are they so destructive and disrespectful of security or authority?? Do they not understand?? It really frustrates me..

I think people need to change before india changes..

If we calculate the amount gone in wrong hands through all these scams.
Our scientists may have built better fighter planes.

we can have scientists. Govt should stop spending lot of money on IITs and IIMs and invest more on university research labs. These IIT folks spend lot of public money and end up in america.

My money is on the LCA. It just seems like a less complicated, versatile machine.
I've long been wondering why air forces spend so much money on a single aircraft with horrible fuel consumption, high operating costs and armed to the point where they could barely take off - why not design a fighter that is much lighter, lighter armed, faster and cheaper to operate and manufacture? Seems India got the idea! Good job guys!

I think the LCA will win due to numerical superiority - it is also faster and less complicated to operate.

The suppliers will only know how much bribe they had to shell out to the defence personnel (purchases) for procuring the order, supplying and receiving the payment for the supplies.
