Most of you speak out like you have seen Sen committing a crime or sedition. I bet majority of you don't know even a thing about Sen or what he had been doing..And Sitting inside an air-conditioned room and enter into your keyboard criticism on social activism and the poor is too easy a job...If you ever venture out and see the real India and experience how babus work hard and the ways they take to avoid a person opposing their whims, you won't be the same person again... For the upper middle class who always wants to be inside the comfortable zones under their roofs, Dr. Sen might be a terrorist, just because he was called so by a group of officials and rulers who always want nobody to know how they crush the human rights...
Friends, please open your eyes and see the reality, at least once... That won't cost you your lives...But live as a human being and let others be the same.

dont tolerate sedition,,,
by yogesh khandeparkar on Jan 04, 2011 05:02 PM

Under no circumstances, sedition should be tolerated in India by the lawmakers & the media, if we do then it wont be long before the country disintegrates. There has to be vigorous clampdown on these sort of so called activists. Activists whom for? for the naxals who kill our brave security forces coz of which we are able to sleep peacefully at night...

No One is above the law.

Manas Sen
Dr Binayak Sen
by Manas Sen on Jan 04, 2011 03:56 PM

Doing good work amongst the poor is certainly laudable. But that does not give you the right to engage treasonous activity. If you have indulged in even one illegal activity, you have to face punishment. Dr. Sen, most unfortunately, you have done exactly that. So your problems are your own making.

Shame on the system
by antifanatic@rediffmail.com on Jan 04, 2011 02:01 PM  | Hide replies

A violent and totalitarian ideology like Maoism is not acceptable. But the larger issue of social and economic exploitation & deprivation of the poor tribals in the name of DEVELOPMENT cannot just ignored ! Many poor people have lost their lands & livlehoods for DEVELOPMENT like dams, mines, reservoir submergence or factories! The corruption in the system and cronyism prevails where the certain CONNECTED individuals. politicians' kith & kin, industrial houses, MNCs and contractors operating in a cosy partnership, make untold riches at the cost of the poor! So many poor have also been displaced in the name of sanctuaries and national parks leading to man-animal conflict too. Without a social safety net, the poor & dispossessed will indulge in retaliatory violence, especially when they have nothing else to lose! The Naxal problem is an issued of systemic governance failure! Blaming NGOs, environmentalists, Human Rights organizations and the liberal intelligentsia is pathetic to say the least. They are the conscience keepers of society otherwise the state can become absolutely authoritarian!
Dr. Binayak Sen has been convicted on the flimsiest of evidences even when scamsters like Raja, Kalmadi, Adarsh society promoters, land grabbing CMs, MLAs & MPs are making merry!

Do you understand the difference between Economic offences and terr0rism? The quantum of punishment may be disporportionate to the alleged crime of Dr.Sen. Then he has recourse to the Higher courts for redressal of his grievances.

What do you have to say about the spineless & corrupt Chief Justice of India-Balakrishnan who took no action when a scoundrel minister like Raja tried to influence a Madras High Cour Judge, or when he sat on allegations against a corrupt judge like Justice Dinakaran or when he himself made false claims for expenditure on foreign tours with his wife & family and about the illegal wealth amassed by his daughter & son-in-law? Remember the cash at judges' door scam where justice Neera Yadav has not been prosecuted? The judiciary is also not above reproach in our country now!

I do not hold any brief to defned the corrupt babus and politicians. If they are guilty, they should also be punished.

The Kerala govt has already ordered a probe into the illegal wealth of his SonInLaw.

Why every case should look for higher court for better justice.
If lower court does not function minimally, then
it is better to fridge them.
Why lower court can not deliver a meaningful and
reasonable judgment so that it would strengthen the hands
of upper court as well as total judicial system?
Moreover every people in the country do not have
enough strength (money and more correctly muscle)
to move to the higher court.

If the lower court verdicts are always acceptable to every one, there is no need of higher courts at all. Let us wind up HCs and the SC.

The tribals are now caught in the crossfire between the cosy cronyism of politician-industry-landmafia-contractors backed by the might of the state and the violence unleashed by the Maoists! When the tillers of the agricultural became the land owners and got pattas after land reforms were introduced, why should the tribals, who for centuries have lived in harmony with Nature, not be allowed to get economic benefits from the sustainable development in these areas?? The mineral resources generate enough wealth for that like the royalty from the mining. When visible & sustainable development takes place with good governance delivery, the Maoists will be isolated as no community will prefer violence over peace & prosperity.

Priyanka, Rahul, Sonia Antonia Vs. Binayak Sen: Indian system
by U Samanta on Jan 04, 2011 12:55 PM

Priyanka, Rahul, Sonia Antonia Vs. Binayak Sen:
so called Indian system is double standard mask of Cong and Corrupt system in India.
When first three visited terrorist in jail, they were Angel of God and mercy and full
Indian security force were provided to them to give them safety, when Binayak Sen visited
a so called terrorist (or Maoist), he became terrorist's sympathesiser.
When someone visited Afjal Guru, they became secular, but other way B Sen become terrorist sympathesiser and get life imprisonment.
Mr. Sen who spent his life for serving poor and helpless people only and
he got this kind of capital punishment in prison. Then who is person poor people would depend on in this so called Indian system?

by sg sg on Jan 04, 2011 12:52 PM

by extending any support to a terrorist groups whether passive or direct should be concidered an act of treason and if dr sen has in anyway shown support to the violent ways of the maoist then he should be punishable under the toughest laws. his family have the luxury to make the statements and leave for another country but what of those who die every day in kangaroo courts of the maoists and innocents who live under fear and damage all national property
