Uncle Pai
by Ashok Kudva on Feb 28, 2011 08:16 AM

I was 4 years of age, when I first read Amar Chitra Katha with title 'Story of Krishna'. From that day till today (4 decades) Amar Chitra Katha & Tinkle are part & parcel of my family. Uncle Pai was like one of our family member, though we never saw him or met him. His books were our friends, which we have preserved with great care. He will remain with all the Indian children till time immemorial. I am sure the new generation will take forward his journey in enlightening the children. Thank you Uncle Pai & we miss you.

Uncle Pai should have been awarded Padma Vibhushan
by joshua gurion on Feb 28, 2011 04:56 AM  | Hide replies

Uncle Pai through his 'Amar Chitra Katha' has made generations of Indians familiar and proud of its rich cultural heritage and mythology, something which no Politician did or tried to do.. For this he easily deserved a Padma Vibhushan.
He was truly one of a kind, a selfless soul who could easily connect with children. Whatever mythology I know and am aware of its all due to his comics.
Unfortunately with the coming of the TV, cable and private channels in the mid 80's, paper media like Amar Chitra Katha lost out. But there is an interesting trend. THe children of the earlier generation who turned in to adults again started purchasing Amar Chitra Katha to educate their kids!!!
May your soul rest in peace Uncle Pai!!

Mr joshuaqurion, I am to agree with you and Uncle pai should have been awarded with a national award which a writer
for the children, for the men and women of all ages. Now i am above 70 but I was verymuch pleased to read and enjoy pai uncles comic books books of indian puranas. In all his works you can see a pai,s touch which deferentiate the author from others.PAIMAM we miss you not because you are a gsb writer but only because you are great in the field but you did,nt honoured by the Govt machinery just because you are born and brought up in an ordinary konkani brahmin which community is not a political force or vote bank nor honurs the jewels from themselves.I pray the Almighty to bless your soul to rest in peace.

So long, Uncle
by Sridhar Penna on Feb 27, 2011 12:13 AM  | Hide replies

He was perhaps not a story-teller in its literary sense. But as the man who gave a native touch to the epics was enough to make him the modern-day Valmiki. He understood the child psyche` like no other.

His greatest legacy is that he inspired generations of youngsters to take to books.

It is wrong to remember him only for classics and mythology. His other baby, Tinkle, filled the vacuum that was created after Indrajal Comics made an exit.

That he was humane` is evidenced by the numerous opportunities he gave to writers and story tellers of every age. It was courtesy of his selfless promotion that many later day story tellers blossomed under his wings.

Uncle Pai, you were one of kind. Thanks for everything you gave us. I literally grew up reading your creations.

Impression of Indian Mythology
by Chethan Kakanur on Feb 26, 2011 12:21 PM

I would not accept any other IMAGE apart from the ones in AMAR CHITRA KATHA for any character.
When i see serials based on MYTHOLOGY the new images JUST dont FIT into my mind since it is not matching what was depicted by UNCLE PAI...
