Do you understand the meaning of a variant? This is an upgraded model of the C130. The C130J's have been in operation only since 1996. And these are new planes.

Hello!!! We not talking about whether it is new or outphased. what we need to do instead of buying foreign equipments to sfegaurd our nation is the question. and how effectively we shall do and what are the hurdles is the question. India has to start thinking of designing and manufacturing its equipments and that should be way ahead of all these big cats. it is possible if a political will is shown. because that is the biggest hurdle in our nation.
if a Variant of a decade old is new and then i don't know what to say.

well said , some people they don't know what they are talking bout without knowing the facts ..never incourage any advancement
India developed its indigenous Battle Tank ARJUN Initially It had severe problems but were sorted later Indian Army Placed an order of 2000 T90 with russia against 125 Arjun from DRDO Once the move to order T90 against ARJUN was challenged by then defense secretary one on one comparison test were made between Arjun and T 90 in the Thar desert and Arjun fully screwed T 90 RESULT FINAL ORDER for ARJUN was made 125 125 (after field test) For T90 2000 Nos

thats lame argument dude... indigenous development takes time and also lot of initial investment. there will be many failures and in a country like ours a couple of failures and people will go over the top.
But once you learn from failures and build full proof system, then producing it is very cheap and you can produce mass numbers unlike foreign purchase.
Armed forces always go for foreign purchase as they are the guys who will face enemy and they cannot wait for your research to fructify. Ofcourse visionary leaders encourage indigenous development so that the infrastructure is developed for future generations to compete with best in the world

dude at least illuminate yourself before calling someone lame. see the field comparison of T90 and ARJUN and comment accordingly. DEFENSE beaurucrats dont decide deals on the basis of Utility rather then on the basis of commission they get. It is the poor soldier who suffers at the end because of the illequipped weapon. You can see the No of MIG 21 crashing the primary reason being poor quality spares brought from UKRAINE and not from Mikoyan-Gurevich (Manufacturer of MIG). Whatsoever indian researchers will produce the defense beaurucrats will go for higher commission articles. LCA might see similar fate in the future.
Aviation infustry is a strategic sector. Like Energy. you can take it for granted that we would not get enough inputs in such sectors from abroad and complete indigenous development will take many years. But it takes a visionary to start such programmes right now.
If we can produce products in these two sectors completely on our own, then we are on par with developed nations.
In this context... our aviation sector would have gone long way if we had accepted proposals of Kurt Tank, the german second world war pioneer who was in bangalore. alas our leaders then had more conservative outlook... no sweat ...we should initiate it now

Prof. Kurt Tank designed the best fighter of WW2... he had worked at madras institute of technology and Prez Abdul Kalam was one of his students ...later he also work in HAL ... during that time he had given many recommendations which our idioticcc politicos brushed aside

else we would have been way ahead of china even in stealth technology. Prof. Kurt Tank was genius par excellence and we didnt use his genius .... always same reason ...no funds... politicos have to eat so much that there is hardly anything left for real work

Gone nuts, bro? Actually, it's India which is the World Leader in Stealth Technology. Everything is hyped but never seen.....

world leader eh ? .. we are very far from that my friend. the materials research in the country is only picking up for past few years. that is why we are collaborating with russians to get the knowhow. but they wont just give it away.

yeah we are the record holder for stealth especially our MIG-21 Coz it disappears once it takes the flight and nobody via any RADAR is able to locate its location
You don't have to say it chief ... we all know its meant for northeast landings....we have to deter chinese from any misadventure by thinking we cannot lift troops and put them in remotest locations because we have no proper transportation roads in northeast. This aircraft will fit the bill in such vital situations .... this was long due. you should reinforce logistics before you build strike capabilities. what use is of hitech weaponry without proper supplies and logistics. Wars are won only by quick mobilisations. supplies is the key to winning battles....
india should have more drop, attack and evacuate forces ... that includes airforce transports and chopper squadrons specialised only in that art. On army side they need troops who are best in short combats and effective in finishing small objectives ... we need many such pins (pincer forces) that can keep large enemy formations pinned down

Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd has a factory near Kanpur where they used to build Avro 748s. This factory should be revamped and Indian engineers and technologists should be given enough finance to build a suitable military transport aircraft. Later, they can build a civilian version also.
