Why do only attacks on the west "change the world"?
by saurabh deshpande on Dec 11, 2011 08:22 PM

Why is it that events affecting the western countries are perceived to "change the world"? Be it Pearl Harbour or 9/11 attacks - those events are supposed to "change the world". Events of an equal or even a larger scale that take place in non-western countries are easily forgotten. It is a western-centric and western-oriented media.

The motive behind Pearl Harbor. The Japanese decided to save face
by Vishnu Sharma on Dec 07, 2011 09:23 PM  | Hide replies

The Pearl Harbor attack was a last ditch effort by the Japanese empire to save face and dominate the Pacific and East Asia and have access to the mineral resources of the Dutch East-Indies and French-Indo-China after the US imposed severe oil embargos and sanction which would have brought the Japanese economy to a standstill. The US did this in response to the Japanese occupation of French Indo-China in early 1941 which happened after negotiations with the Vichy Government of France, the northern part of which was under German occupation.

The surprise attack by Japan on the US would have been completely successful if Japan had employed more submarines and spotters to target and sink the aircraft carriers: Yorktown and Lexington. Had these carriers been sunk, the US would not have been able to defeat Japan in the battle of midway and US entry into the Pacific theater of war would have been delayed till 1941.

The attack on Pearl harbor was followed by simultaneous attacks on the British Malaya and the bombing of Singapore and the Japanese drive south soon after the attack saw them carve out a Pacific empire stretching from the Solomon Islands to the borders of Burma and Australia.

Superb stuff Rediff. I for one, am wanting to read such blast from the past, and also well researched stories. In 5 minutes, I now know what happened back then and what is Pearl Harbor and also that Japan's self defence is an extension of their police network. Now its clear why Japan must have refused to supply nuclear equipment to India, when the world was salivating to supply the same.

That may be one reason, but the main reason is that Germany and Italy surrendered but Japan refused to surrender.

Incredible India,

Why should you waste 100 bullets if you could finish off a person with a single bullet? Moreover till that day no country including USA were not aware of the after effects of an atomic bomb, because it was not tested before in any war zone! They got a golden chance with a valid reason and they utilised it at that time itself as they really don't have time to prepare dossiers!

Since the Japanese refused to surrender, many more American and Japanese lives (than the number killed by the atom bombs) would have been lost, had the Americans been forced to invade the Japanese mainland. Secondly, if the Americans wanted, they could have atom-bombed the bigger cities of Tokyo, etc., but they chose the smaller cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki instead. The atom bombs could not be used on Italy and Germany because they had already surrendered before the atom bombs were ready for use. By the way, Germany suffered very heavy conventional bombing by the Allies, and did not escape the loss of many lives.

What happened in Srilanka
by Nadimuthu on Dec 07, 2011 06:23 PM  | Hide replies

Why you are traveling so much distance?
Think what happened in Srilanka
More than 40000 civilians killed by their own countrys army.
That too without any witness.
The voice of 6 crore co-brothers are kept in silents by few families in Chennai and Delhi
100 crore people who think they are the saviours of ethics in this world, did not come forward to protect the people of their own religion.
In the last the message is
Jesus christ, Buddha, Gandhi also have a place in this world
So also Musolini, Hitler, Idi amin etc
