To those who think it took more than necessary time to construct a bailey bridge, have a look at what a bailey bridge is...it is not a pontoon but a fully functional bridge. the Only difference is it is a pre-fabricated, modular bridge without aesthetics that can be assembled quickly without heavy equipment.
That's not fast, it took over 700 combat engineers 4 days to build a Bailey Bridge of 250 feet span on land?
It was very very slow by military standard.
Say this pace is equivalent to contracted company Which took 7 yrs to build permanent bridge. Baily bridges are for emergent warfare conditions where time is scarce. It should take not more then 24 hrs to get functional.
Sorry to say but this is simply not impressive. Army did not prove itself.
7 days are far too long. I am worried what army will do if it has to construct bridge within 12 hrs in hostile land? Army is getting leftover talent from technical institutions, best one go to cushy jobs.

This is not a military operation, but a civilian one. In a military operation a bridge is constructed with the simple objective that the troops have to cross a specific point, so the same bridge had it been in a combat situation would have been built in less than a day. Since this is a civilian bridge they had to create a temporary structure that is designed to carry civilians and an accident after it is constructed would be catastrophically. So it was built in 2 days and day to mobilize, 2 days to construct and a day to test the structure. While i agree it is not a great engineering feat but it is an impressive display of its organizational ability
Some of the problems reported in CWG village: 1. Toilets were very dirty, seems to have been used by the workers. 2. Pan stains all over the place. 3. Leaky taps etc., etc. 4. .. Why are toilets dirty? Because we never cared for those workers from Bihar, UP, ..Their living conditions are abysmal. They simply do not have toilets ! It is well documented that many girl children drop out of school because many do not have toilet for girls (There are reports by WHO). Gastro disease is rampant in the villages. especially among women, because they do not have proper toilets. This is not a laughing matter, a pretty serious issue.
We do not provide basic amenities to those who build our infrastructure. Manytimes their safety is compromised. 2. There is a huge Pan parag lobby. This should simply be banned. I have talked to people in these sites, why Pan? Simple, they do not feel hungry ! Who is to blame ? They or we ?
3. What have we done to train these people. Masons, carpenters, plumbers etc., are a dying breed. Are there people who care for them?
4. Child labor is rampant. At our place in ED, faculty were up in arms to stop this.
CWG brings out a larger issue. Issues, which are never brought to the forefront.
Damn India's pride. Damn the games. I want my guys who build the all important infrastructure to live a decent life.
Filth is not in the dirt strewn around the toilets by the construction workers. It is in the mind of the rich and powerful

The Indian armed forces has shown that it is a world-class institution once again.
Many thanks to the Madras Engineer group of the Indian Army for setting up a solid bridge within a mere four days.
The Indian armed forces comprising of the Indian army, the Indian navy and the Indian Air Force is a superb world-class organisation in itself , and the civilians should try to emulate them and imbibe the qualities of character, professionalism, strict attention to duty, attention to detail, mental strength and a never say die spirit in spite of all odds, which have made the Indian armed forces the stable and dependable force it has become.
Civilians themselves should imbibe these valuable qualities , and shoulder the burden of making India a developed nation by 2020.
If the one billion of us ( not including the two million strong armed forces ) in itself work hard and intelligently with character and self-discipline to develop ourselves and our country, the collective output can destroy all present evils like poverty , illiteracy, corruption, terrorism and all the vices that is preventing our nation to become a full-fledged developed nation again as it used to be in the past .
As the great patriot Chanakya who along with Chandragupta Maurya defeated Greek imperialism and set up the first officially recorded Indian empire in 320 B.C had said in the Arthashastra ," Nothing is impossible to the person who has determination."
