All these awards should be considered as awards to Sanskrit poets because all Indian languages are connected to Sanskrit in some way or the other. Even Urdu has plenty of words from Hindi, which again is derived from Sanskrit.

You are right. In a way Malayalam is a protector and preserver of Sanskrit.
