Pot belly in India is considered a sign of prosperity
by SaneIndian on Sep 08, 2010 12:05 AM  | Hide replies

Its the culture that needs to be changed. Every Indian male after they cross 30 has a pot belly. They have seen that with their parents, uncles... They think its all normal. Even females in India are like that. Terrible figures and totally out of shape.

For their own good, Indians need to stop eating white rice and other sweets. Eat more veggies and lean white meat are good.

Our food culture has been totally watered down and now all people can eat are starchy foods.

I feel sad that I don't have a good job and don't have the ability to buy a house, but I feel very proud and happy when I look at my pot belly.

Stop visiting India Restaurants in America
by Bjs Suseel on Sep 07, 2010 10:46 PM  | Hide replies

Most of these restaurants are run by people with no idea of nutrition. All fried in vegetable oil, cheesed to death, meat after meat, carb loaded with more carbs, and high fructose corn syrup. Please avoid all buffet lines, and avoid ethnic restaurant geared for Americans. Drink red wine, salmon, salads, fruits, olive oil, brown rice, excercise, sleep early, and reduce stress, and send the annoying wife and children back to India for good. Work less, play hard, and enjoy life. and vote out Obama and democrats in November.

You hit th enail on its head. I have to appreciate all your comments and simple put a ditto. The comment on the wife gets the Crown. You made me laugh for a very long time.
I tried several restaurants and if pick out dishes made lentils or chick peas, they use canned which is loaded with Sodium and other unwanted preservatives. I realize very well eating in Indian restaurants is injurious to your health....

Understand the difference between being slim and being lean.
by Sandeep Menon on Sep 07, 2010 10:26 PM  | Hide replies

This is very important - and considering that I'm taking 10 minutes out of my day to write this - makes it even more important. We Indians do not tend to be 'massive' or 'obese', for the most part. Indians in the US see Americans weighing 300 or 400 pounds and compare their 200 pound figure and console themselves as being 'relatively thinner'. Sure we are, but the point to understand is that being thin has got very less to do with being lean. Some folks are genetically predisposed to be fat. Anything that they eat will cause them to become fat (if they don't exercise). However, some folks will remain thin, no matter what. Please understand that if you eat unhealthy food and you don't exercise and if you still remain thin - it doesn't mean you are healthy. To be healthy - you need to be lean, not thin. Being lean means having lean muscle. A man, 5'10" tall, weighing 180 pounds can have clogs in their arteries and not have lean muscle. Walk briskly for 30-45 minutes, it'll do wonders. I agree, it's difficult to take advice from an unknown person on a forum but anyone who believes they don't have time to maintain their health - has to reconsider their priorities. Good luck.

I agree with your comments that brisk walking for 30- 45 mins will help a lot. Please clarify if that will reduce the pot belly? i would appreciate your advice on eating only Proteins in the night? Whys is it good to have your dinner between 7 and 8 pm.

Eating anything healthy at night is all right, as long as you give your body decent time to assimilate. Give your body atleast 2.5 - 3 hrs after dinner, before going to sleep. Hence the 7-8 pm suggestion. Eating late will not affect you much if you ate healthy. The idea is not get the food to deposit as fat but be digested a little before you sleep. Eating a higher protein diet is definitely good but do understand that proteins are more difficult to be assimilated into the body. So, unless you are working out (not necessarily in a gym, but regular exercises), do not increase your intake of protein a whole lot. The term 'balanced diet' is something we've learnt from school days - it's a very important term. You can move around your carbohydrates intake and protein intake here and there - and that is bound to happen for the most part (unless we follow a strict diet). The idea is not to overdo or under-do anything. Brisk walking will reduce pot belly - that is just fat, like fat in any other part of your body. Your genetic disposition and the exercise intensity will decide how much time it'll take to burn off the belly fat. About protein intake - an important point to remember, if you increase the protein intake, do increase your water intake too. Regarding walking - if you have access to walk on an incline, do that. The results are amazing compared to walking on flat ground.

Another point - eating early and then sitting on the couch watching TV doesn't really help either. The amount of energy burnt during sleep is usually more than what is burnt sitting idle on a couch. So, take a 10-15 minute walk (even inside the house) after dinner. Sit straight when watching TV and get up from the couch (consciously make the effort) every 10-15 minutes. It's all small steps to getting your body out of a lethargic lifestyle.
