Nobel Peace Prize
by Raj on Oct 10, 2010 06:57 AM  | Hide replies

Blair and Bush were nominated but Obama won it being a bigger hypocrite. Nobel Prize is totally politically motivated. Most deserving like Mahatma Gandhi can never receive it. Those who protects western political, economic and military interest or contribute to it directly or indirectly are sure shot winner. Prize of dissident who work for foreign interests.

Nobel Prize is totally politically motivated.
------------------

At the cost of being inconsistent with the my own past postings, would like to rephrase what you say.

Nobel Peace Prize, which is given by Norway legislature, as per the will of Alfred Nobel, reflects political judgement. Political judgement, in the prize awarding context, is a reflection of national values, and priorities.

Incidentally, Indian constitutional ideals are no different from the values of Norway, though priorities may differ. In democracy political judgement is considered the hight form of judgement, which enables the nation to tax, to award, to go to war, appoint all people to government, authorise institutions to implement various aspects of law, and above all to create laws of the nation.

We may not agree, we may even dissent, but let us remember that Alfred Nobel trusted them over any other institution including his own national government to award this prize justly, and that we need to believe is what they must be trying, even if they do not always succeed in doing so.

Wish our media would be doing a better job in creating common understanding and healthy percpetions of sound institutions we need to aspire for, relate to, and benefit from. Else these dissonances can be very expensive for the nation.

Through our limited acts with limited means, only a handful can be reached. And it is long overdue for this tired deck hand to retire to oblivion.

rogues and freebooters. India will be ruled by men of low calibre and who are of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. Governance will be in eternal peril as the politicians will be busy with their petty squabbles"....................................................Winston Churchill (delivering his note of dissent in 1946 in the House of Commons against the house resolution to grant independence to India)

Yes Churchill was a statesman and farsightedness is the essential quality of a statesman. He was dead against granting freedom to India and was directly responsible for the Bengal famine of 1943.

With the utterance of "India" this arrogant bulldog turned into a devil. Once the war was over the people drove him out of 10 Downing that he hardly deserved.

I hope Winston Churchill, the guy who presided over Bengal famine 0f 1943- one of the biggest man-made famines of the 20th century is recognized as being a mass murderer in the same category as Stalin and Mao. Damn him!

As an admirer of Winston Churchill, was deeply saddened to see his juxtaposed with Stalin and Mao. Think, along with FDR, he was able to reflect upon and clearly annunciate the values and freedoms for which Second WW was fought, an immense price in terms of human lives and economic destruction paid. Those values and freedoms which were later to become integral to the Constitution India gave to herself.

Yet, you refer to a very serious, pertinent and most disturbing question about his role, or rather neglect regarding taking right decisions about Bengal famine.

There have been other contradictory facets about him, most notable was his love for imperial splendour denying to the empire subjects the values and freedoms he professed for Britons. He did respect Mahatma deeply, and opposed freedom to India on the ground that a small minority of Indians would commandeer most of the resources.

His thoughtful observations on why he opposed freedom to India have relevance even today, though ofcourse his assessment was rejected by Britishers themselves who voted him out, shocking Churchill, to prefer Atlee.

To accommodate Chruchill as a well wisher of India, which I believe he really was, is an unfinised lesson for us.

Request for empathic reconsideration of him, also of Rudyard Kipling, and even controverial personna Macaulay. We remain less of an Indian by not fathoming Britishers connected to India.

How gullible people can be to lap everything handed down to them. Stalin presided over a country surrounded by enemies, constantly endangered by famine and civil war. 20 mill. Russians died in WW II. In such circumstances he used every ruthless means to make his country a super power. Churchill had no such excuse. He was a racist, a vain pompous, self-centred buffon. The fact is with their empire Britain should have won the war easily. Ultimately the US and Russia won it for them. By the way Ramesh, 8 mill. Russian soldiers died in WWII. How many British - 300 thou. only. This is fact, verifiable. Yet we belive the nonsense Western historians give us.
Churhill had greatness thrust on him. To make their stories believable Brits had to make CHurchill a hero. Apart from his speeches, it is a know fact that he slept during afternoon, during meetings etc.

Suggest you read Churchill in original, his speeches and his autobiography to get a true measure of man, instead of any handed out versions.

Suggest you read more about Stalin himself, the ruthless police state he created, his treaty with Hitler on Poland, how six million Kulaks were killed on his orders, how millions more starved while Russia kept exporting foodgrains. Pls read Cancer Ward by Solzhenitsyn. Yes Russia and US won the war and Russia bore the brunt with maximum losses. Indians also played a critical role. We need to judge Stalin, the tyrant by what he did to his own people and what they think of him presently.

Yes, in his autobiography he would have omitted the Bengal famine, the disastrous economic results of gold standard, the fiasco at Gallipolli, his racist beliefs, his boozing and smoking and of course his own people rejecting him after the war. Suggest you read a little more about Churchill. Stalin was a monster but Churchill was worse - a racist monster like Kissinger who killed people through famine and poverty rather than Gulag camps

Whether it be Mughals and other Islamic rulers, or be thr Britishers, there is much to be troubled about grave injustices done.

But, as they say, when the flood waters recede, after having caused havoc and much destruction, the alluvial sediments retained by the land makes it a fertile ground.

Likewise, those era are not history and we have the liberty to review sans fear or hate, the merits and demerits to spark and enrich our fertiled imagination. Those cultural treasures are for us to enhance and keep.

It is his - story, and written in their favor by Churchill admirers. This awe of everything western has already cost us millions of lives and failed policies and a derelict Judicial system which totters on 19th century readings. Unfortunately anything better or any reform is rejected even before consideration as our "past masters" have successfully destroyed all traces of our vernacular systems.

There are no hidden facets of Gandhi's life, the Mahatma himself being very candid and open about what normal people may consider as his embarrassing practices. His experiments in celibacy are condemned by Arthur Koestler in his book "The Yogi and the Commissar".Later Yogesh Chadda(Rediscovering Gandhi) and M.S.Gill(Mahatma:A sublime failure) elaborated on this theme in their books.Mr.M.V.R.Sastri,in his Telugu book castigates the Mahatma's political as well as personal deviant character.

was a drunkard, womaniser who kind of sort attention. Somebody has rightly said that "Churchill was something like a male version of Paris Hilton"

How he evolved into one of the greatest politicians of all time is a novel of its own.

He did not evolve. Till the end he remained a pompous buffon. WWII was such a huge event that even pompous speeches seemed realistic, so his speeches which normally would have been laughed at seemed timely.
The real reason is a hero is that Brits need a hero to personalize their contribution in WW II. You cant grudge a people who have suffered in a war trying to cover up that their leader during that moment was a buffon and a racist. Look at China today - they rejected communist theories, know Mao is a mass murderer (even young Chinese in mainland China will whisper this). But to the world they will not admit this as it questions 50 years of their history.

Pertinent point Sanjay. India must be the only exception which hides the genuine history with great shame and projects their conquerors with undeserving greatness.
