even if the UN SC seems irrelavent but the powers that are still use them for to extend their issues either way. so we cant dismiss it all togeather. but we dont seem to learn from the mistakes starting with nehru as to how we can use it to influence or secure our interests and by doing so we are paper tigers that the world presently sees us as but knows fully well we have a long way to go before we can show real strenght in terms of nation building, internal security foreign policy and political will, till then china and every other nation will undermine us in every way possible

We were offered the Security council seat

...when the UN was founded. We refused to take it since we felt that China was the "proper" occupant of the chair.

Why any country other than P5 have to live with this discriminat?
by Ravi on Oct 04, 2010 05:03 PM  | Hide replies

Shun the P5 and make an alternative forum which is democratic and representative. If P5 wants to be part of the new forum, they are welcome or let them run the UN as they like with their Veto power. If at any point in history it was possible it is now. The non P5 are the major contributors to the UN functioning. Brazil, Germany, India, Japan can initiate & fund the new initiative and have the new office. I don't foresee any problem from UK, France or Russia and I don't think US would want to be sidelined with the China in this democratic setup. If China wants to be singled out let it be.
Why is it so difficult for the majority of the countries to come together for a common cause?

While the idea seems grand on paper, on the ground it is economics which drives politics. So one cannot disregard the economic impact that the Big 5 have in today's world.
However, in groupings such a G8 there is also the military element and the ability of the nation to project it anywhere in the world. Would a combination such as suggested by you stand this second test? Most probably not.And as far as the economic blocs are concerned, we already have SAARC. Would a seat in the UNSC serve any useful purpose. I don't think that even China an emergent superpower takes it very seriously. Likewise, Japan, Germany and the Scandinavian countries take the SC seriously. Why should we?

Still living in dreams? Wake up!. In this world that are only two things that count. And that's money and power. Unfortunately, India has neither. Guess what? The US is in the midst of trying to get China to be more involved in world affairs, matters related to South Asia included. While China is not presently interested, you can't rule out the possibility that, in 10 years and when China's GDP is equal to or more than US', the US and China will form an axis that dominates the whold world. Democracy? What democracy? Saudi Arabia is no emocracy and the US is a lot closer to the country than it is to India. Democracy? By the way, is India, a country that divides its people into several classes through the caste system, that kills its own citizens using machine guns on a daily basis, really a democracy?lol!

Have u forgotten your own Chinese army killing your own people in thousands and what the world has seen in Xinjiang and Tibet confirms that. Have your forgotten Tianammen Square and who killed your own people

As for divisions, it is there in your own nation as well, haves and have nots with the ever widening gap between the rich and the poor.

To u India might seem a funny democracy since u have never tasted the fruits of democracy in your life so far. Beng a product of tightfisted one party rule, your thinking is also like that

Membership to the UN-SC
by ravi prakash on Oct 04, 2010 03:40 PM

The message of the article is sensible. As as one can see, the SC of the UN have not acted sensibly. They have kept alive a phenomenon formed in WW-I and perfected in WW-II the coming together of the coalition of western powers or the Allies to fight global wars.
If one were to see the actual performance on the ground, the Allies( under the concert called as UN) has not been able to prevent any wars. Their intervention has only resulted in continued civil strife ( Korea,Iraq, Afghanistan) present even to this day. Taken singly, the US has been as a major player in the actions of the Allies, but it is losing its hold over the other members of its allies save Britain
What larger purpose would India gain by becoming a member of the UN SC or by default the Allied coalition except that it was on the Allied side in both the world wars. If there be a higher purpose then this ought to be known to the other members. When ordinary people cannot fathom the reasons it would be far difficult to convince the advanced countries effectively.

No need to change Security Council
by Vivek Dev on Oct 04, 2010 02:00 PM

All the current SC members are super powers int their own right exert great influence in all spheres much beyond their borders. This is not the case with the rest of the countries of the world. Their is no need to change the constitution of the SC at the moment as the change will only hobble the decision making process of an apex global body. India for all its posturing and grandstanding can never be expected to back any UN action against any Islamic country and its presence at the council will only add to the Security Council's problems.

by Wepoorindians on Oct 04, 2010 01:40 PM

If you get a large cache of amount as Defence budget ,even your mind will swirl and you will start thinking of milking it. This is what is happenign across World. So nobody wants to resolve issues. As long as Kashmir issue will remain intact, vested interest people will keep on thriving on either side of the borders. Nobody wants Poor people growth .This is the fact of basic life. Such issues have got nothing to do with any religion. It is sheer money that is driving it for ones personal gains. Since majority of population live hands to mouth on both countries and do not have access to eduction and knowledge, they can be easily fooled with active conneviance of Media. We see TV News as they are all true hardly try to look behind the news. If it says, cross border fighting is taking place we believe it
