get the infrastructure right!!
by rahul m on Dec 01, 2010 10:00 AM

government should first built the high tech infrastructure for design, development and testing of aircraft components like the engine.you cannot expect to build a football team without having a football stadium.DRDO does not seem to have the facility to test aircraft engines for high altitude tests and the engine is being tested in russia.LCA engine seems to have some problem in high altitude tests like in Himalayas where we are likely to have most conflicts.

Rediff is always like that, shoddy photos which are so old that even the photographer will not remember them.

If we can indigenise atleast 50% of our Defence Purchases, lot of employment will be created in India. But not sure if Military brokers would allow that.

LCA is enough for low intensity war like the one in kargil and taking care of pakis mischief.for tough opponents we have the sukhois, mirrage, upcoming F16 and fifth gen currently under development with russia.but yes we are yet to master the engine technology and we have to learn it using any method, like reverse engineering, else what is the use of doing transfer of technology here?

Reverse engineering engines has proven to be nearly impossible. Else, Chinese will not be buying them.

The aircraft will be a vintage one by the time it is inducted in armed forces.20 years of development without an engine.DRDO should get new brains to make something usefull

20 years are 20 years in your and my life.
But in development process it is just a month.
development is not an easy task as to just modify a Roti, cook it plain or stuff it, even bake it square if that tickle your fancy or cooking vegetable where you can modify to your taste.it will take just few minutes to perfect.
In machinery of any kind development is done component by component if one is made better then the previous one others might need re designing as well to compensate the changes.
Sometimes the whole unit is scraped all because it has either failed the drawing board expectations or there are intensive modification that it is easy to rebuild the whole section.
It is a lengthy and painstaking task.
try it your self try developing something try designing something simple just on a paper you will soon get the idea get the idea.

Warplanes and Engines technology are really difficult to master. India, China can put a satellite around moon but are yet to master these technologies. Give them some time.

it is between a fourth and fifth generation fighter.this is a beginning step for drdo and mark 2 is already planned with design modifications.u can see design modifications in f16,sumk1,f18.sweden has not come out with anything after grippen but keeps on upgrading it.drdo is already planning for a full inhouse development of gen next aircraft.

since India developed it, the aircraft will not become vintage since we can make Mark I II etc. If we buy it from abroad by competition we pay more, we dont get tech know how, and defenitely no chance of improving the aircraft to latest standards. example is by the time last MMRCA will land in India, in 2025 we may not need a manned aircraft.

What can DRDO do - it has to choose from the brains that are available. Also, its not just about brains - you need vision, management and resources. Until recently, India lacked all of these. I am confident India will make rapid strides in the next few decades. Even US made most of its progress after 1960s though they got independence hundreds of years ago and had no dearth of resources or talent.

Why it took so long distance to take off? Its a fighter plane not the domestic airline..

Besides that, Congrates

probably because these are flight trials and DRDO doesnt want to take chances...one of the said reasons for the delay of Tejas induction is the slow pace in which the trials are going...if (god forbid) any mishap happens, Tejas will never see light again especially since a strong arms lobby is against it.

also IAF is said to be unhappy with the current engine which they say is not giving sufficient power...i dont know whether less power also means more time to take to skies.

But i hope now it will be inducted in numbers soon (at least 2014 when it is going to get FOC)

Good stuff! Its nice to hear progress made on this front.

Close combat is never going to happen in real life scenario. It should be beyond vision. The plane would be shot down by missiles with further reach.

We are still taking the baby steps. Don't lose the focus and let us build on these little successes. Well done once again!

I think you are not right. for air interdiction for a semi stealth aircraft BVR may not suffice. Short range missiles are also necessary with quick reaction times. example is the topgun programme of USAF still ongoing to train close air combat.

How are we supposed to react after watching that 2007 video ? Sing national anthem and get goose bumps with patriotic fervor ?

You fking morons should maintain/upgrade your website on an hourly basis. The antiquated page displays show historical events - yoga for sex, IITs, Who left 50 lac job to work in NGO, Indian Navy on Somalian pirates.

This fking bogus nonsense has become too ridiculous.
