Dance of Democracy
by vijayan balakrishnan on Nov 14, 2010 05:41 PM

It is gratifying to note that good sense prevailed upon the conceited military junta as the dance of democracy has been highly reassuring in so many countries around the world. The efforts of some nations, which proudly call themselves as the affirmed champions of human rights, have fructified in championing the cause of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi after a long drawn campaign for her release using sanctions and international pressure. India, as the largest functioning democracy of the world, has rightly welcomed her release by the ruthless Myanmar rulers heeding the sane voices of the world and sparing her of the hardships merely for espousing the cause of democracy. Now, it is to be seen whether this will remain short-lived or otherwise till the next elections in Myanmar. On her part, Aung San Suu Kyi must not let down the international community which vociferously fought for her release.

Dance of Democracy

The Myanmar rulers had the audacity to turn its back to international opprobrium and turn down the earnest and anxious appeals for her release citing it as a domestic political issue rather than a naked human rights violation. The draconian military junta was not alarmed about the increasing international ostracism and opinion turning against it for obvious reasons as the ruthless dictators enjoyed the support of some Asian countries, which had nothing to do with democracy. The entire world has been watching helplessly the goings-on in Myanmar with grave concern and anxiety as well since the unkind rulers were feared to eliminate the sane voice of Myanmar in the name of justice and rule of law, which are conspicuous by their absence there. Fortunately, the mounting international pressure succeeded to secure her release and political freedom for her this time.
