Indias relations have been screwed up due to wrong moves right from second world war. India was always viewed with skepticism by US during 60-80s as India aligned with Soviet Union. Tensions peaked during the Nixon - Kissinger period. India participated in Bangladesh war 1971 despite US requesting India and India assuring that it will not interfere in Pakistan matters

US is a member of NATO and has allies in the entire developed world, Europe, Australia, NZ, Japan. Siding with Soviet was perhaps not a good start for an impoverished nation. After the break up of soviet, it was a bit too late for damage control.
