About Tharoor
by Ajith T on Mar 11, 2010 06:53 PM  | Hide replies

Many people commenting that Tharoor is naive and does not see the political pitfalls in the Indian context. But, that is what makes him different from our traditional crowd-pleasing and regressive politics. After all, there seems to be some hope for the future if more individuals like Tharoor come forward and join politics.

Note: I have been following @ShashiTharoor on Twitter for the past one year.. and I'm yet to find any of his comments out-of-place or "controversial"; whereas I have found certain public statements from his senior (SM Krishna) and colleague (Preneet Kaur) to be very stupid. So Tharoor definitely has it in him to be the PM one day..

God forbid? He would rush to Saudi to follow up on his offer and hand over kashmir to pak. That is how he is different.
I find all his comments not only controversial but damaging to country's interests. He is immature with all his credentials and his english is something we can do without.

You find it controversial coz either you dont put any efforts in finding what exactly he told, rather than just swallowing the stupid remarks of those politicians who became MPs by doing dadagiri OR your idea of India is different from his idea of India which is developed, democratic and SECULAR!

chinese diplomats with poor english achieve more than taroor
by shilpy on Mar 11, 2010 12:23 PM  | Hide replies

that is a fact. a chinese diplomat gets more work done in usa or any place important abroad in just one visit than indian diplomats do in years. i am yet to see anybody list taroor having done anything right for india. indian people, most of whom speak bad english, get easily bamboozled by the likes of taroor. the man is a nobody in usa. about the only time he gets his say when he has something bad to say about hindus. a chinese will never ever be critical of his own countrymen abroad.

Shashi Tharoor-
by R Swaminathan on Mar 10, 2010 07:59 PM  | Hide replies

I would like to put forward some of my observations from the details given by some of the writers in this column so far.
1)Shashi's academic and upper class upbringing with no roots in this country make him indeed a 'FOREIGN MINISTER'
2)His academic credentials are sited as qualification for the job he is holding-you do not require these but an understanding of the country's ethos and interests-He lacks both
3)Someone wrote that he is very transparent-the biggest disqualification for a diplomat, who is supposed to feign transparency on the opaque interior.
3)The doyen of indian diplomats sardar K.M.Panikkar defined a diplomat thus
when a diplomat says yes ,he means perhaps
when he says perhaps it means no.
if he says no ,he is no diplomat
so my friends do you realize what it takes to be a Minister for external affairs
you only need to be mature, know the country well and it's interests otherwise any amount of knowledge of english and polish will not help you.You will end up with 'egg on face'
got it?

Looks like you didnt OBSERVE properly. Tharoor's academic and upper class upbringing happened right here in India (Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Kolkota and Delhi)before he got scholarship to study in US. And he converse in Malayalam just like any Malayali. May be you need to observe better. Check out his speeches in Youtube, you will find out what a diplomat is, and how effectively he is representing India in front of the whole world.

The heart of a fool is in his mouth and so Shashi Tharoor is big mouthed. The only irony is that the mistakes of this fool are known to the world, but not to himself

Agree that he is big mouthed. But what he telling is truth. And India already have enough political hijadas who lack balls and never seen an education institute up and close. He is one of 'the hope' for future India.
NB: Another irony here is that now mistake foolishness of you is known to whole rediff board now.. but not to yourself.

All your points are "Cattle Class Rubbish". It's your Bitterness and Helplessness may be at office that you see your image in him trying to achieve what you couldn't. Only the standard of living benefits from Formal Education, it hardly builds up a man's 'Brain'. You have a living example in Shashi Tharoor who is nothing but a 'Big Mouthed Fool'. He is just serving Country as an Advisor, not a Worker which he is selected for.

Shahsi Tharoor may know English but that is not the required skill for being a foreign minister,I really dobut if he is in touch with mother tongue of his parents that is Malyalam leave alone any other Indian Language.

Heads would have rolled in MEA after Egypt joint declaration where our foreign ministry included reference to Balochistan. But what ST did zilch.

I read one article from ST where he considers Hindi to be an artificial language just 200 years old , It's another matter that there were balads written in this language throughout the middle ages and it is atleast 900-1000 years old language.
If this is his view on one of the 22 National langages and a language that is mother tongue of 40% of people and as second language or lingua franca by majority of nation we can just understand how much rooting he has in Indian tradition.

while the writer may disparage Bihari TTE but a Bihari retired IAS Yashwant Sinha made much better minister ( first as foreign then finance) then ST.

varied distinctions. And in a nation where the standard leader is little different from the wayside thief in every manner, he stands out like few others do.
However, these reasons alone may not help him win the next election from Trivandrum constituency. The electorate of Trivandrum may have lost it's usual focus in the last election, perhaps going glossy eyed over Mr.Tharoor's credentials and ignoring the politically and administratively much more credible ones of his communist opponent who had served them well in the previous term.
Mr. Tharoor can expect his electorate to put his less than agreeable record so far in the service of his constituency under the scanner the next time. His high profile ways notwithstanding, it would be what he actually delivered in terms of helping his constituency address it's myriad issues (that his predecessor tackled with gusto and with great merit) that would be the sole criterion the next time.
