Indias role
by vinnie on Jan 21, 2010 05:00 PM

I believe India can play good role in this situation. India can take up civil confidence building measures and proliferate more into root level afghan people. India has long history of helping Afghan people; which can be used for advantage.

India can then use its civilian influence to stop Afghanistan becoming golden egg for pak and strong foothold for taliban/al-Qeda. India just need to use its intelligence power in this case to provide crucial information to US. Rest they will take care of.

US is already tired of double standard of Pak while working alongside it and cannot rely on Pak anymore.

Again India's act will not be only in US interest but majorly in India's interest. Afghanistan is our backyard. US is still far away from Afghanistan. If US leaves Afghanistan, India will have uphill battle to fight against Pak and Afghan both.

One of the few decent, apolitical articles on rediff
by Fried Yakov on Jan 21, 2010 04:59 AM

Other than th earticles by B Raman and the like, this is one of the few readable articles. Obviously the US is taking a beating in Afghanistan, and cannot win the war unless it changes its strategy.

In the midst of inoriginal Rediff writers (and Rahul Gandhi bootlickers) like Vicky Nanjappa and Sheela Bhatt, this guest editorial peice by Rajeev Srinivasan is a breath fo fresh air in terms of analytical depth and situational clarity.

Keep up the good work Rajeev. Hope policymakers heed you more here in DC.

You are absolutely correct- and the US has no hopes of winning there unless it uses WMD's in good measure.

My friend- the Americans are surely not winning in Afghanistan- and you know the reason why. Afghanistan will be another Vietnam for the US- and time shall tell
