Tibet was and always had been an independent nation
by Raj on Dec 10, 2010 04:13 PM

Chines border dispute with India arises with its desire to gobble up all the land in this region. Tibet was a great country once and it had its own ruler in the form of Dalai Lama and there were foreign missions set up in 40's in Lhasa. China invaded Tibet and grabbed it with force. Now it is claiming parts of India as its territory. Tibet was a weak nation as its army was no match for Peoples army of China.Inadia had border with Tibet and NOT with China, Had Indian Government provided open support to Tibet during those days, there would not have been a problem with China. China is eying Kashmir and than pakistan too, specially pakistani port of Gwadar, pakistan is unwittingly getting swallowed up by the dragon, thinking it will help weaken India, which is a mistake on their part, future scenario will be an independent Balochistan, a seperate Punjabi Pakistan, Baltistan(will be under China) and roads going from it to Gwadar to be controlled by China in future. Once China gobbles up parts of pakistan, it will entrench India from North and west. India need to have a very strong relationship with Russia and USA to thwart Chineses invasion in future.

China

It is a sad state of affairs when two age-old civilisations like India and China, which in the past have had an extremely fruitful and peaceful co-existence are today hell-bent on outmaneuvering each other.

India must realise that precipitating the peaceful settlement of the border dispute is more important than taking sides in the global power game.

Meanwhile China needs to understand that not everything is achievable through force and that the world really does not believe that China's hold on Tibet is purely peaceful in nature or its effect on Tibet has been positive.

Remember Mansoravar and Kalash Parbat is in Tibet. We Indians never seige Tibet for that. Tibet was free before 1950 and should emain free.. Chinese incursion in Tibet should be condemned. however since His holiness the Dalai Lama has said that Tibet can remain as an autonomous region China should accept it, and let live the Tibetans in peace. Tibetan cutlure is being lost and more and more chinese from the Hunan province are occuping Tibet and making the Tibetan community a minority. China needs Water source from Tibet and let there be a treaty for that. China is threat not only to India but to the world. they want Tibet, Taiwan, and then they will lay stake to both the Koreas as well. Its time the world oppose such tyranny

Talking bullshit here. India had never been a united state before the British came, and even today the whole northeast and Kashmir are fighting for their independence. North and South India are fighting with each other and cannot compromise on each other. Tibet belongs to Hastinapur?? You go Arunachal or other northeast India, and tell me if they're more close to the Chinese or the rest of India?? Stop nonesense talks here. India's democracy makes the soil most messy and smelly in the world.

looming future
by Ramesh on Feb 04, 2010 04:15 AM  | Hide replies

US Prez has once again gone out of the way to reiterate that Tibet is integral part of China. This perhaps was done as an attempt to cope up with the pressures Chinese must have exerted. So even if Revered Dalai Lama meets US Prez, it would be a non-consequential one.

US it seems has decided not to give up its policy of engagement and and strong economic relationship with China. So all measures which will tone down the rising temprature in their relationship would be taken.

This has two major fall outs for India. Any strategic dependency on US would be very risky for India. India will only become a bargaining chip in the G-2 relationship. Second, the security scenario for India would deteriorate significantly as Sino-Pak nexus is quite a strong one and China is outgrowing India by a wider margin each year. The momentum imparted to Indo-US relationship by former Prez Bush can simply not be sustained.

As it is, the diktats of economic strength is ensuring exit from Afghanistan by 2012. As and when Yuan fixed rate is scale up per the Sino-US axial talks to higher level, most of the foreign bases would be unviable and rapidly shrink.

Non-alignment policy, our long standing one, perhaps shall stand the test of time.

What is really needed now is a new security doctrine to marshall the future needs for preparedness.

The new policy of level playing field just announced by Hon Defence Minister is a welcome one and may make real difference. Also heartening is the success of Akash missiles, perhaps the most complex missile in Indian stables. The success of this ABR missle is a great achievement and demonstrates maturation of technology.

The security doctrine being prepared for simultaneous threat from China and Pakistan might have been influenced by desire to deepen strategic tie-ups with US. It would only expose India to graver risk.

The better option is a doctrine for SAARC securrty, for which the political climate is not ready yet.

Another may be closer architecture with S Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, and Japan, but this would need commitment to open up with Taiwan to which our internal politics, particularly of the left-liberal variety is not yet ready. It would be consistent with SAARC security doctrine as and when it becomes implementable.

Unless US plays its cards correctly and demonstrates firm long term commitment to take on China, and formally initiates a policy of disengagement with China, it would simply be not rational for India to deviate from its non-aligned framework. Even in medium term also this development is unlikely.

Dalai cannot represnet Tibet today
by bhgwt rajat on Feb 03, 2010 07:31 PM

Talks between China and special envoys of the Dalai Lama were not a Sino-Tibetan dialogue, but a meeting with two 'private representatives' of the spiritual leader on the future of His Holiness and his associates. Chinese correctly said.
