BCCI should pay taxes
by Mr Walker on Apr 24, 2010 03:38 PM

BCCI and IPL should pay taxes , they should also be paying for the security cover provided to the cops and state.

Finally what they do with the remaining money is their business but since these guys have become so big on peoples money it is expected that they actually build good sports facilities across the country to promote all sports and not just cricket.

What will these people do with all this money anyway ??

BCCI SHOULD BE A PROFESSIONAL CORPORATE ENTITY
by damodaran mohan on Apr 24, 2010 02:51 PM

BCCI should function like a full fledged professional corporate entity , what is the problem ? It is making tons of money so it should pay up all the state and central taxes. That way it will have better accontability with availability of transparent balance sheet, statement of a/c etc.The reported present status of BCCI as a charitable trust or body is all humbug.

If BCCI is a private body...
by vorpal on Apr 24, 2010 01:17 PM

If BCCI is a private body, it should have been treated as such by the government of India. GoI ought not have allowed BCCI to hold monopoly for all cricketing activities in India. Actually, I remember the Supreme Court on one occasion observing that the cricket teams representing India are BCCI's teams, not "National" teams. BCCI has been tyrannical towards cricket players at large, and has also effectively prevented other financial enterprises entering the business of cricket by bullying the players.

Surjit S Bhalla started well...but....

Puh-lease give us a break! Lalit Modi is not much of a goat being scaped. He is the son of K.K Modi owner of Godfrey Phillips Tobacco Co, who strongly disapproved Lalit marrying Minal, a lady 10 yrs older than him a divorcee of a man jailed in Saudi for syphoning funds from Inlaks Co. Disgusted with his troubles in getting Lalit out of jail for drugs in US and arrogance during his marriage, but knowing Lalit's potential for trouble, his father reduced Lalit to an allowance and honorary directorship of his tobacco Co. Lalit was thus always short of money until his access to Rajasthan cricket thru a common friend of Maharani Scindia(BJP angle). If Bhallaji disassociates Lalit from IPL, then pray, why does Lalit grin like a Cheshire cat when he is called the emperor of IPL? He no doubt, is an emperor, even if Sharad Pawar's role is yet to be investigated thru his daughter's father-in-law, Mr Sule, who was chairman of Sony Corp India's MSM Co. with Sony's 400 crores of facilitation money missing and unmentioned in IPL accounts, negotiated by Lalit Modi. Last 3 years Modi has been on holidays to Phuket, next Italian Riviera with a hired luxury ship where a grand party was held for Indian Politicians, a holiday in Imran Khan's wife Jemima's father's mansion hired in Mexico! Lalit's wife with step daughter's family has stayed thru her treatment for breast cancer(now cured)at Bel Air, a posh Californian resort. He is envied for using his Lear jet like a taxi! Wh

Either you are on the payrole of Lalit on an overdrive of damage control or a complete sucker with a defeatist streak ;) True some get away due to our flawed and perforated judicial system, but you still have the Tehelgis, the Harshad Mehtas and Ketan Parikhs to draw encouragement from. So do enjoy IPL... so what if you foot Lalit's holiday bills instead of enjoying one yourself??? You choose to offer free services to the likes of Modi but unless society gets sensitized and free of your likes, we are doomed! So go give your chill talks elsewhere!

What was IPL Governing council doing ?
by vijaya kumar on Apr 24, 2010 11:15 AM

I am just asking where were the 13 wise men of the IPL Governing council doing when the Lalit Modi was doing all these stunts???? The likes of Gavaskars or Shastris and Mansur Ali Khans were just silent spectators is too much to digest. Why no one is challenging their integrity about all these turmoil in IPL? The leader is as good as the team members and this has been said many times by Gavaskar and Shastri in their commentaries on cricket world wide and here they are saying they are different then their leader, how absurd??? The full council has to take the blame for everything and resign en masse or they have to just keep quite what they have been doing so far in last three years and let the Lalit Modi do all the dirty tricks which they are claiming now after all this turmoil!!!!!!! what a smart group of people!!!!! They want to eat the cake and keep it also!! Mr. Lalit Modi I thank and salute you from the bottom of my heart for all the lovely cricket you designed and delivered it too, to the cricket loving people of India. If you have to go we will definitely miss you a lot like what we do miss other stalwart like Mr. Jagmohan Dalmiya who like you took Indian Cricket to the level not thinkable by the even Britishers and Australians

Modi is being made a scapegoat
by vijaya kumar on Apr 24, 2010 11:14 AM

Modi is being made as scapegoat. BCCI is nothing but a treasure for politicians from all parties to share the booty and amass wealth at the cost of the nation. Now Modi is being an outsider meaning not a politican every political party joined together and crucify him as if he is alone responsible.
Modi as a single man can never do without active collusion of politicians. The present Govt talks of cleaning the system and it is a crude joke.
A report says more than 50% of mps belonging all political parties are having criminal back grounds. Even the allies or earlier allies of congress party’s right from Lalu, Mulayam and Mayawati are being charge-sheeted for corruption charges. Now the congress is acting as holier than cow.
Had Modi colluded with Sashi Tharoor this problem would not have come to such a pause. These political parties receive cash for election from Industrialists and this is going on for a long time. Modi today became a victim as he underestimated the wickedness of our politicians. But Modi has a chance to revenge by disclosing the entire facts without sparing any politicians in the murky deal. Modi should bring in the truth and the real colour of the politicians who looted and amassed wealth in BCCI and IPL.

BCCI mess
by P S Subramanian on Apr 24, 2010 08:36 AM

This article which has appeared in the Business Standard has brought out some of the critical issues which need to be addressed on an urgent basis. I hope the assertive TV channels like CBNN and NDTV would have read this and are poised to take it forward in a sincere and aggressive effort to ensure that the cupboard is broken open and all skeletons are identified and removed. Yes, both the BCCI and the IPL will have to be viewed through a high-power lense; and every cricket institution in the various states, all the members of the governing councils of the BCCI and IPL need to go through the same deep scrutiny. Every minister needs to be closely observed and probed for his involvement in this money-spinning game, and brought to books. The recent IT surveys have proved to be nothing but a vendetta by the present govt, and with the behind-the screen deal struck yesterday between Modi and the BCCI, the govt may like to cool its heals and close all investigation. It is important that the govt is not allowed to do this. Every skeleton in the cupboard has to come out. Even names like Pataudi, Arun Jaithely, Ravi Shastri, Sunil gavaskar should be no exception. At the end of it all, good men will stand out and qualify to take over leadership; and the bad men will leave the scene and carry the can.

Great article
by mohan on Apr 24, 2010 07:28 AM

Yes, BCCI is the most corrupt org in the world, the IPL is just a Mini-me version of BCCI.

Even in the match-fixing scandal, BCCI managed to keep aloof and scapegoat a couple of players while very clearly the BCCI officials were a part of the scandal.

IPL / BCCI
by Dinesh Vijapurkar on Apr 24, 2010 06:43 AM

did sharad pawar as a senior minister president of BCCI (PREVIOUS YEAR) at least try to pay taxes. ?
He should be tried in a court of law. It is no longer a private matter between Modi and BCCI. All involved in the cricket body must be scrutinised including Sunny, Harsha, Shastry, and ALL THE POLITICIANS involved in cricket.
