Hidden agenda
by vinnie on Sep 21, 2009 04:12 PM  | Hide replies

I can sense hidden agenda of various govt lobbies to control VOIP such that it generates more revenues for them and allows them to intercept calls of legitimate individuals.

In western countries they have tools to monitor internet traffic and intercept all internet traffic including VOIP calls. Instead of upgrading its own technology, Indian government is either putting onus on current ISPs or either going ridiculous length of banning VOIP calls.

If government does employ intercepting mechanisms, they must make sure that such mechanism is not misused for personal or political reasons. Such mechanism must be only controlled by CBI or similar body and limited to terrorism related suspects - backed by relevant information.

There has been cases of intercepting calls of some important social & political figures in favour of ruling politicians in the past.

Policy of not terminating VOIP calls on PSTN network is harming innovation and business in the country. It does favour to telecom providers in India; but kills small businesses who are working with their overseas counterparts.

I agree with you. The easiest way out in India is for the Govt. to put a blanket BAN on a service. 7-8 years back a senior Army Officer in J&K forced BSNL to close all PCOs and shut down Internet service to combat terroism. This was at time when there were news reports that the terrorists were using satelite phone. Wonder what the Army hoped to achieve. People in J&K started getting on to Internet (it was only dial-up those days) through places as far as Chennai, Bhopal etc. etc..

Corruption is the root cause of all evils

No amount of laws on the books will help. In India LAW ENFORCEMENT IS A JOKE. It is true privatisation of law. For a fee, any crook can buy his freedom from prosecution.

Deal with CORRUPTION first. Enforce laws QUICKLY and TRANSPARENTLY.
