INDIA NEEDS TO MANAGE WATER HARVESTING AND WATERSHEDS.THE WHOLE COUNTRY HAS SEEN TEH DROUGHT THIS YEAR.THE IRRIGATION POTERNTIAL IS TEHRE BUT WE HAVE NOT TAPPED IT.THE CHECKDAMS ACROSS THE RIVULETS,NULLAHS ARE NECESSARY WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF NREGA .IF WE WOULD CREATE SUCH INFRASTRUCTURE OUR COUNTRY WOULD BE SAVED FROM THE DROUGHT CONDITIONS AND ALO THE GREEN REVOLUTION WOULD USHER IN.APART FROM CREATING SUCH INFRASTRUCTURES WE HAVE TO CREATE COMMUNICATION INFRASTRUCTURES LIKE ROADS,BRIDGES .THE COUNTRY IS AT TEH CROSS ROADS NOW.THE GOVT SPENDS BILLIOSN OF RUPEES IN SUCH INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENTS BUT WHAT IS SEEN THAT NOTHING EXISTS AFTER SIX MONTHS.THE GOVT SHOULD FIX AN WARRANTY PERIOD ON ALL TEH INFRASTRUCTURES SO THAT THE MALPRACTICES WOULD EB ELEIMNIATED.
In my place as part of cleaning roadsides the NREGA workers clear cut the saplings along the roads, thus "cleaning" the surroundings. Three-four year old trees are mercilessly cut. In Kerala, due to the huge density of population the only place for trees to grow are this public roadsides and they too are lost. Another thing is: the works, if done for self or for some private persons would take 5 fold less human hours. As many as 20 people are cleanings 500m of roadside in one day!
I dont know how NREGA works in other state,in Tamilnadu it spoils whole agricultural activities.NREGA should be there when and where there is no need of more manpower for agriculture activities.Nowadays workers under NREGA fighting officials not to give more works.
